What's the trick to getting the forend nut off the 870? I got the barrel and mag ext. off just need help on the forend nut. I guess this is a daily repeat question. Do I just buy the 50.00 dollar tool? Someone suggested needle nose pliers but there not working for me I just went out and bought two pair (Needle nose and 8'' long nose) and I guess I wasted $25.00. I also tried a flathead screwdriver and a hammer and Rem oil and no luck. BTW the gun is a 870 Express 6 shot 18'' barrel. Thanks |

I found 1 1/4 inch wood bore bit fits perfectly across the gap on my 12 guage 870s. You can find one at any hardware store. Use a pair of channel locks to grip the flat part and just give it a twist to unlock the threaded collar so you can then finger spin it off of the threaded forearm. Hope this helps! Anyone else have any great "Hill Billy Gunsmithing Techniques" to share? BIGGER_HAMMER

I haven't had time to personally check, and I'd be a little leery of damaging a key component, but someone recently told me he used his Remington's bolt slide as a wrench. I strongly DO NOT recommend the needle nosed pliers trick. A recent post on another forum had a Remington owner rather bitter about following Internet advice about the pliers trick. He slipped, and did serious enough damage to the thin action bar tube assembly that he had to buy a new one. I usually tell people to just buy a piece of 1/8" flat steel stock and make a simple screwdriver-like bar that fits the notches in the nut. Grip the bar with a pair of Vise-Grips and use it to unscrew the nut. |

Know what you mean about the needle nose pliars trying to hold them open just right and then twist. WAY too easy to slip and damage the gun. That is what makes the wood boreing bit trick so sweet. The span is PERFECT to fspan and it between the gaps and still fit inside the forearm hole. Can't really screw it up, Just twist and off she comes with no muss and no fuss! BIGGER_HAMMER

| My forend nut is 1-1/2 down on the mag tube and the forend comes past the forend nut a little over a 1/2 inch. I went to Home Depot and all they had was a speed bore bit which is a spade bit, is that what your talking about? If it is that won't work. I'll try a traditional hardware store on monday since Home Depot was no help. |

My "Tool Time" memory is bit rusty.... ... but if Spade Bit is meant as a flat wide bit, (like what you would use to bore a wide hole for perhaps a door knob set or something like that rather then a rounded traditional type drill bit), then that is the ticket! BIGGER_HAMMER

Yeah it's wide kinda looks like a badge. The end of the mag tube sticks up a 1-1/2'' from where the top of the bolt is and it's a little over a 1/2'' down into the forend. I dunno maybe my 870 is different I guess I'll have to buy the tool for taking it off or maybe see if a gun shop will replace it for me. Is this what your talking about? http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?ts=98290&id=13528# |

Ok someone on another board figured it out. I didn't remove the forend assembly off of the mag tube. I just gotta get the bit your talking about and I should be good to go. Hopefully I can put it back together right and it fires. dfariswheel I see what you are saying there's a few minor marks on the top of my tube. |

This is the most pain in the as% thing ever! I got the nut off finaly with biggerHammers trick, put the new forend on and put the forend assembly back on the tube and receiver. Now when I pull the forend back to open the action its real, real, tight doesn't wanna go. So what's the problem now? Did I miss something or break something? I put it back together like ten times and the same thing happens. The bolts on the action bars, pushed the right and left shell latches to get the action bars in the receiver, and pushed the action bar up and slid it back halfway, put the barrel in and mag ext, spring and cap. |
| I think that was the problem! I owe you a couple of beers Bigger_Hammer. I was ready to throw the thing out the window it was pissing me off so much. Anyways you would think Houge could of provided the wrench to take the forearm off if Advanced Technoligies can. Oh yeah I orderd the Houge 12'' LOP stock set in case your wondering what kind of forend I was trying to install. I decided not to get the Surefire forend mainly because of the price for a light I'll probally never need or use, but since this is a home defense shotgun and just maybe one night I'll need a light I did order the basic Streamlight M3 weapon light. It was less than half the price of the Surefire and I can slap it on my Glock too. Thanks for all the help and input guys! |

If you are having some trouble getting it loose, try some penetrating oil. Most times the nut is never removed, and at least with my 870 it had obviously gotten wet a couple of times and had some rust buildup caused by water trapped between the wood and metal on the forend. |
