I have used a SideSaddle shell carrier previously. Just got a new shotgun with a Davis SpeedFeed stock that holds 4 spare rounds. Lets compare advantages/Disadvantages between the two items. SPEEDFEED: Disadvantages: -Only holds 4 rounds. -Springs may take set if left loaded over long periods of time. Advantages: -Many different versions offered (P-Grip, non-PGrip, shortened LOP, etc) -Streamlined and fits into standard profile outline of buttstock. SIDESADDLE: Disadvantages: -May warp/bend receiver when mounting screws are overtightened, causing bolt to bind in action. -Long forends wont clear it at the rear portion where it overlaps the reciever. -Counterbalances shotgun to the left due to weight of rounds, causing change of impact due to hold when its full -vs- empty. -Bulky and prone to snag on gear. Advatages: -Holds 6 rounds -Plastic holders retain grip over long times if left loaded. I've not touched on things such as price cost, warranty, ease of installation, etc. Fell free to add or critique where appropriate. |

I've had a speedfeed on two of my 590's for over 10 years. Neither set of springs took a set after staying compressed for many years. Not a lot of spring force needed to eject the rounds. Another CON- 2.75" rounds can eject from the stock by themselves when shooting 3" mag shells. This happened a few times with me and was when the stock was new. May have been related to the shape of the shell end that "hooks in the end of the stock. Also, the speedfeed can be awkward to use if rounds are needed quickly. Works better for specialty shells. CON on the side saddle- the screws holdingthe plastic carrier to the metal adaptor can shoot loose, and spares aren't readily available. My 590 side saddle was damaged, I guess by recoil. The screws weren't overtightened, but the rear screw hole was stripped out easily. It seems it was from repeated firing. |

"Get both" What the hell, why not? Who couldnt use seventeen rounds [6(tube)+1(chamber)+4(SpeedFeed)+6(SideSaddle)] on a shotgun! ![]() I dont know for a fact that the springs can take a set, I just assumed that they possibly could if left compressed to capacity for very long periods. Keep the info coming guys. Good stuff so far. |
| Speedfeeds destroy your ammo!! Ammo left in speedfeeds tend to have their crimps pushed in and the foam packing material leaks out, causing the shot to shift or fall out!!! Speedfeeds also tend to lose their ammo during recoil too. They're just an expensive gimmick. You had better check your ammo if you have a loaded speedfeed stock or it might be a deadly mistake to find out during a gunfight that your ammo is damaged!!!! IF ANYONE THINKS THEY'RE SO GREAT,I HAVE ONE FOR SALE FOR A MOSSBERG 500/590. |

I've had a speedfeed buttstock and 6-round side saddle on my agency issued shotgun since I started 4 years ago. I just replaced my agency gun with one that I had built up by Wilson Combat. No speedfeed stock but I did go with the 6-round side saddle. On the range we shoot standard velocity (not the reduced velocity) 00 buck and rifled slug rounds. I've never had a round dislodge out of the speedfeed stock when firing the gun. You do have to be kinda careful when you remove the first round that the second round stay in the stock. I've also never noticed any rounds damaged by the stock. However, I don't like the idea of having to flip the gun over in order to get at the right side shells. The left side isn't bad, 'cause I'm right handed, and I just pluck them out whith my left hand. I've really been happy with the side saddle. Like has been said before, the shell carriers never really stretch out and loose their grip. It also holds the shells right there beside the loading port which is quite handy. I carry all of my rounds with the brass on the bottom. I've never noticed any difference shooting the gun when the side saddle is full vs. when it is empty. The only real negative I can think of is a couple of the little allen screws that hold the plastic and aluminum backer together have disappeared. I'm sure they would be easy enough to replace from the manufacturer. Ranger413 |
