This weekend I took my new Mossberg 590 to Front Sight for a 2 day shotgun class. I was shooting next to a guy with the same model gun most of the day. The difference was that he had just got his barrel back from having the Vang Comp treatment while mine is completely stock. The difference is amazing. His patterns with 00 buck were ragged holes out to about 15 yards. Then they opened up a little but he still had a hand-span pattern at 25 yards. His 25 yard pattern was only slightly larger than my 7 yard pattern. He tried a shot at 40 yards and had all the pellets on the target. I'm conflicted as to whether this is good or not. I think it takes away from what the shotgun does well at shorter ranges but, at the same time, extends your reach quite alot. I think he'd be effected with that Vang gun out past 50 yards. Not so with my stock gun of the same model. |

Most everyone I've spoke with who has ponied up for the Vang-Comp treatment has really thought it was money well spent. regarding the tightness of his pellet groups and the question of if this is a "good thing", I'd say YES! The biggest drawback to the shotgun is loss of effectivness past about 25 meters (due to the pattern opening up so much as to lose cohesion and risk innocents down range with stray pellets.. Anything that extends that range of the shotgun is Very Good in my book. At close range (inside a room) there is not much spead to speak of anyway, so I believe you are gaining range on longer shots without giving up close range tactical effectiveness. Note the pattern is set for using Buckshot, so you won't get the same pattern with 8s if took your Mossberg quail hunting Also have heard that a side benefit is reduced recoil due to the backboring of the bbl and the relief of the forcing cone off the chamber. Would like to hear about your Front Sight Shotgun Class! I've been thinking about going to one sometime if I can find spare time and spare dime! How about a summary and lessons learned?? Thanks! www.vangcomp.com/ This is their website. I'll write up some stuff about the course here in a little bit. |

I met a guy at the range with a really sweet 590. It was 18" bbl, not 20", but still had an extended mag tube. I'm pretty sure it was 7+1 capacity. It had the ghost ring sight, parkerized finish, and the Vang comp treatment. He said he actually bought it while out at Front Sight, so I don't know if it's something they offer or what. All I know is I want one. |
The guy said it was $250 to send his barrel in and with the work done. |
They don't sell firearms. Maybe he bought it from a fellow student? Plenty of gun guys with lots of cash out there. |

Here's a little rundown of the 2 Day Tactical Shotgun class. frontsight.com/FirearmsTraining/Courses.asp?Action=View&ID=63 Most of the first morning was taken up by safety, weapons loading/unloading, stance, grip, sights, and other general stuff. All the basic FS classes do this on the first morning. It's good info if you're new to the weapons system (as I am to shotguns). It's a little tedious if you've heard it several times already. You shoot some birdshot at steel just before lunch. After lunch is a brief patterning excercise, some more shooting on steel and malfunction clearance. Total round count for day one: about 30 birdshot and 6 buckshot Day two includes alot more shooting at ranges from 3 meters to 25 meters with birdshot and buckshot. There's a brief sighting-in exercise(they do it more thoroughly at the 4 day class). You shoot slugs on paper out to 50 yards. Shooting positions such as sitting, kneeling and such are covered. Also the select slug drill. The best part of the course is the little tactical simulator intro that is run at the end of day two. I don't care who you are... That's fun. ![]() Total round count for both days: about 140 birdshot, 100 buckshot, and 25 slugs. The round count for the 4 day class is obviously alot higher since you have more days of pure shooting. There are also good lectures on legal, moral, and ethical aspects of deadly force and similar topics. This class is a little heavier on weapons handling tasks than some others I've taken there. They teach shoot one load one so you are reloading alot which is good practice. Let me know if you hae any other questions. |
VangComp DOES sell complete guns from time to time...or at least used to. His service is expensive, but I happen to like the fact that patterns stay tight with Buck! Others may differ. |
