There are other differences than the ones noted in the message tacked to the top of the thread. In addition to what it notes, the following is true: 1) The wood stock on the 870P is walnut. The wood stock on the Express is Birch. 2) The Synthetic stock on the 870P is Davis SpeedFeed. The synthetic stock on the Express is Remington. 3) The extractor on the P is machined. 4) Express HD models come with 18" cylinder bore barrels. The P can be ordered with any barrel length/choke combo, but production units range from 14" Modified to 20" IC. 5) The P can be had with a variety of sight options from bead to rifle sight to tritium ghost ring. The Express comes with a bead, and a rifle sight barrel can be purchased as an accessory. 6) The trigger-plate assembly on the P is aluminum with no ISS. It's plastic with ISS on the Expess. 7) And the coolest part, the P says "Remington 870 Police Magnum" on the side! Note: A side by side comparison of my buddies newly purchased Express HD and my newly purchased 870P shows that the P barrel, at least mine, has a higher degree of polish in the bore than the Express. |
I just bought an 18" Remington 870P yesterday!! Took it to the gun range this morning and their main range was down for maintenance!! Anyway, I'm trying to decide what to do with this shotgun. I almost bought the same gun with ghost-ring sight but realized right before I bought it that neither sight was tritium so I opted for bead. This is a bare-bones 870P that I plan to customize. My first inclination was to SBS it to 14" but I'm rethinking that and leaning toward converting it to the equivilant of the Wilson Combat "border patrol" 18" model. I'm just trying to figure out what finish I want put on it. I'm leaning toward Norrell's but haven't researched many options. I'm glad I did my research because I might have purchased the one Express model they had. I agree that "REMINGTON 870 POLICE MAGNUM" looks pretty cool on the side! |

My plan is keep using the Express I have and if it wears out, I will take all my cool stuff off and put it on a Police Model. I have an adapter for my Glock light, M4 type stock, Choates mag extension and plastic forend. All should port over to a police I guess.. Let me know, and thanks. R/ Mike |
| I have a 12 gauge Express was given to me by my wife the first year they came out, 1990 I think? It is my go to gun and has thousands and thousands of rounds thru it, no sigh of wear other than the finish on the wood. When your Express wears out IM me, IF I AM STILL ALIVE. MIKE. |
Well, for what it's worth - I've owned several each(Wingmasters and Expresses), an 870 Magnum Special Purpose, and an 870 Police - and with enough rounds through them(and proper lubrication), the action always ends up the same - smooth and solid... In fact, out of the (2) 870s I currently own - a Wingmaster Magnum and an Express Magnum Deergun - the Express has the smoother action of the 2 - it's also had a higher round count through it... I like Expresses for hunting, and Wingmasters for everything else - besides the times I manage to sneak an 1100 into the mix... - georgestrings |
