Action is still extermely stiff, something wrong with the action bars. Anyone have a forend tube with action bars laying around??? Brownells wants $50 for one, and I'm not real sure this would fix it, hence the hesitation to spend that much cash....plus, there is confusion as to whether its the right part? My 870 police has a slightly different action bar than my problem 870 wingmaster. The left side bar has an additonal indent in the bar that matches a slightly different bolt base..... |

Can you swap bolt, base and action bars tube assemblys as a unit on the two guns? That should at least tell you if the issue is with your receiver or with the parts themselves. Which one is binding? I am guessing the Wingmaster? I have seen a few 870s that had a ding or some rough spots on the rails inside the receiver that needed to be stoned off...careful, those rails are VERY sharp! It is pretty common on a used gun to find a ding or burr where someone has managed to get the bolt and base twisted while trying to put them back in...heavy handed guys will also sometimes torque the shit out of the fore end / tube and action bars if the bolt gets stuck. Most likely, however, it is the action bars...they are pretty fragile once outside the receiver...good news is that they can be tweaked a little with no harm, but not a lot. They should be straight, and a slightly twisted unit is a bitch to diagnose sometimes. Unfortunately I do not have a spare fore end tube. |

Is this something that just started on an otherwise normally functioning gun or is this a brand new gun? Could the front stock have turned slightly on the forend and is rubbing against the magazine tube, barrel, and/or the receiver? Do you know if you did something to damage the action bars that you're sure they are the problem? |
It's gotta be the bars. I've tweaked them on ocassion and had them work fine, then dissassemble for cleaning and after reasssembly, it reverts back to the hard cycle..... I'll get an order out for a forend tube ass soon. ![]() I wonder if the new assembly comes with the new action bars? Compared to my 870P, there is a slight difference in the left action bar and the left side of the slide assembly.... I feel this is going to be a frustrating fix. |

3 days ago I disassembled the forend to cut it so it won't hit my 6 shell side saddle while loading the 870. Upon assembly of the forend to the forend tube, I didn't install it straight and the left side of the forend is hitting the barrel causing a stiff action. Took the forend off , centered it and it worked fine. Look at the top of the barrel and check both sides of the forend and make sure there is a gap between the barrel and forend so it would not rub together. Just my .02. 556man |
| My Police Model appears no different from either of my Wingmasters on ther outside4...honestly, I have never taken it down to see if there is a difference in the bolt, bolt base (we used to call it the slide) or action bars...I will do that tonight and report back. Personally, I think that with the great demand for 870s a few may easily have leaked out with poor heat treatment on the action bars, but I have no proof of that. Certainly, Remington will not announce it to the general public if it did happen...just wait to see how many come back for repairs. |
| Well, well...kiss my grits! I just pulled it down and guess what? It IS different! My guess, but it is just a guess, is that they will use the older model stuff for Wingmasters and Express Models as long as they have them then transition to the new for everything. Ya learn something every day! |

So, what you're telling us is, that it wasn't really that "Damn 870!!!!" that was the problem - it was the dumbass that "tweaked them on ocassion" (the action bars).... For a minute there, I thought you were blaming it on the shotgun - thanks for clearing that up for us... - georgestrings |
Personal carried on duty....
Yes, it was the dumbass that somehow tweaked them....
