I want to mount a flashlight on my 870

what are my choices?

I've looked at the surefire stocks but don't really want to lay down $225 bucks for one

alternatives?

You can buy a mount that fits under the magazine cap and allows you to mount an Insight M3 or M6 but I don't like it nearly as well as a SureFire.  If you keep an eye out on the equipment exchange and ebay, you can usually find a good SureFire light for about $150.

I use a surefire on an 870.  I think a light is the most important thing to add to your shotgun.   I think it is the first thing you add on.

I owned a couple of Surefire handheld lights before I bought the one for my 870.  I have always had good luck with them all.  I found after I put the light on my 870, I would go for the 870 first when I wanted a gun with a light.  Now I keep a belt with a holster, mags and surefire for my Glock near my shotgun.  If there is time I can get the Glock and put the belt on too.

In my "urban" experiences I have only needed to get out the shotgun once in the daylight hours, a rabid dog snuck up on me in my backyard.  The rest of the time has been at night:
A guy snuck up on my wife after dark in the driveway
A peeping tom one night
A group of teenagers after dark, breaking in to cars
A guy stalking a neighbors daughter from my front yard
Other crap after dark

I agree that the surefire gives you better control of the light on a shotgun then the M3 or M6 setup.

For me, going back about 10 years ago, the alternatives did not work.  If you don't buy the Surefire first, and you can get it cheaper than $225, in the end you will spend over $300.  Here is why, whatever you buy first will fall apart or won't really work that well.  Then you will go out and buy a Surefire, thus buying your light twice.

Your primary gun should have a light.  I have 3 guns with lights.  Buy the light.

I've seen SF forends for the 870 and Mossberg for around $190.

Save yourself the headache later and buy a SureFire light up front.  The SF is shock-isolated to withstand the punishment of the 12-ga recoil.  You could mount some other type of light on there, but the recoil is going to tear it apart, and you'll end up buying a SureFire in the end.  Yes, they are a bit more, but you get what you pay for.  Well worth the extra cost, IMO.  Try finding a good deal on eBay, or talk to Robert at www.sableco.net--they have great prices and are great to deal with.

What Sharkman said.

Better to save the money and buy the best than to just end up putting out for in the end anyway.

Are you crazy I gave you the best price at $169.95 and you go and buy one for $180 +  what is up with that. That is it I am going to keep all the best prices for myself and forget you guy's. Thanks for spending your money on something that I could have saved you at least $30.00 on! Very Dumb.

'product wizard' who i've never used:

$170+ $8 shipping = $178

cabelas, who i've used several times in the past:

$190 + $12 = $202 - $20 coupon i've had sitting around for a while = $183

"product wizard" may be just fine, but if I can get a close price from someone I've had no problems with before then thats what I do

plus, cabelas doesn't charge a restocking fee if for some reason i would have to return it
