I shot my first silhouette match a couple of weeks ago and did pretty well in the rifle and cowboy portions of the match but my pistol was horrible. I had used my Browning Buckmark Camper for the match and even though the Buckmark shoots very nice, I struggled. Since I've always been one to have the correct tools for the job, yesterday I went looking for something a bit more suited, that way when my scores are bad I can only blame myself. I found this Ruger Mark III Competition Target and after a bit of dealing I traded in the Buckmark and took home the Ruger. I plan to try to get it to the range today to get the sights zeroed.

What kind of problems did you have?  I have been reading a lot of threads on the Ruger and Browning pistols as I do my own research.  I bought the Ruger 22/45 Mark III because it had the shape that I want to train with.  I don't like the extra safety stuff for the same reasons that everyone else posts.  I do like the gun though.  A lot of people rave about the Buckmark series and I had considered getting one.  If you can elaborate on the issues and then give a comparison to how the Ruger affected the same issues, I would like to know what you found.

I had a MKII Target Comp, a very good shooter that got better with a Volquartsen drop in accurizing kit. I ultimately found that I liked the lighter Buckmark for what is really more recreational shooting, but the Ruger was always more consistently accurate.

Not really any problems with the Buckmark, just didn't hit my targets like I thought I should have. Probably all me, but hey, I had to come up with some kinda excuse to tell the wife why I needed a new gun . I do think the longer barrel of the Ruger will help with the longer shots (40 meters). The Browning, for sure, is lighter and for plinking it's perfect but I like the extra weight of the Ruger. I did get the Ruger to the range yesterday and after getting the sights close I shot about 100 rounds, in 10 shot groups and it seems to be just a bit more accurate than the buckmark (20 & 30 meters), of course it's not broke in yet so I guess we'll see. The only thing I can say I didn't like on the Browning was the fiber optic front sight, maybe the bead was just too big and I could have swapped it for something smaller, but I just didn't really fit my eye. Other than that, I haven't had and problems with the Browning.

I just ordered a MKIII and am planning on buying the Volquartsen accurizing kit. I am specifically buying this pistol for the silhouette competitions I have been participating in. Our competitions are called a "woods walk" because we shoot at targets in the woods. Most of them are under pretty significant shade so its not nearly as easy as hitting targets you can see well. I need the extra sight radius with my poor eyesight. This pistol will be my entrance into the open sight pistol division.

I have the VQ sear and hammer in my MKII 5.5" and it is outstanding. I will be adding the trigger for it to my order next week, so both of my pistols will have over travel and pre travel adjustments. I use this pistol with a red dot for the scoped pistol class.

I know this is nothing to get excited about, but the top target was shot with my MKII at 50 yds with my poor eyesight and a burris fastfire from a rest.
