I've seen a couple threaded mosquitos come thru my local shop and none of the thread protectors come off. What gives?

Could be they're cranked down tightly from the mfgr. They supply a wrench to loosen/tighten them, so they probably think it needs to be pretty tight to keep from coming loose under recoil.

I bought mine used, so it probably had been on & off several times, but it was still pretty snug.

I bought a 08 and it's righty tighty lefty loosy. Standard.
You need to use the supplied tool if it's cranked on hard.

I'd recommend that if it's on there hard, that you somehow secure the barrel when you're twisting the thread protector off. The barrel is mounted in plastic and could break if torqued enough.
