My friend is new to guns in general...he bought his first gun, a brand new Smith 22A, yesterday. The ones I tried out at the local range seemed fine, so I figured it'd be ok, either way. Today, he took it out for the first time; I don't know if he cleaned/lubricated it or anything before coming to the range. He had a bunch of failure to fires. About half showed almost no strike on the case rim, most of the rest had a pretty decent strike but apparently not enough to set it off...and occasionally the slide wouldn't close all the way forward; tapping it on the back would lock it shut so the trigger could be pulled. The misfires would happen easily 3 or 4 rounds per magazine after the first 3 mags...as you can imagine, he was a little bummed by it The not closing all the way, maybe once or twice a mag, every other mag or so. I don't think he put more than 100 rounds through it before he gave up and starting shooting my 22/45.Any idea what the cause(s) could be? I'm guessing a lack of lubrication/cleaning before going to the range, but I'm not sure if the Smith is known for issues such as this or not... My Ruger MKII 22/45, on the other hand, ran like a champ all day |
| I hope he had the perseverance to clean it before using it. That's kind of dangerous not to know if it's got an obstruction. When it's cleaned up, use a dri-lube on the moving parts if he's going to fire it right away and regular gun oil on the surfaces. If I'm putting them up for a while, I'll use regular gun oil. Also, have him buy a box or two of 50 rounds of a few different manufactures. Sometimes a 22 can be picky. I always use a high or hyper velocity round in semis. I have the 22S and have not had any problems going this way with it. |

I had the same problem with mine. Some 22A's have it and others don't. The problem was with the chamber being too tight... Depending on the ammo used. CCI would feed fairly reliably most of the time, but since it has a harder rim, it didn't always fire in the 22A. (Not a strong enough hammer spring, I guess) The problem you are having, with the slide not going into battery and the light strikes are related. I would be willing to bet that you are using a bulk pack? Something like Rem GB? I eventually had my chamber reamed. Functions 100% now. Here's what you need to do: 0) Place the pistol on "safe." 1) Load up two magazines with the ammo you were having trouble with. 2) Insert loaded magazine. 3) Proceed to cycle the slide by hand. (Slingshot - Pull back and release) 4) Make sure the slide is not OOB by smacking the rear to set it. 5) Repeat steps 3-4 until the slide locks back. 6) Repeat steps 2-5. NOTE: Cycling the ammo by hand ensures that they will cycle when at the range. Optional: 7) Load the same ammo into the magazines again. 8) Repeat steps 2-3 with both magazines. NOTE: Only do this if the ammo felt stuck in the chamber upon first extraction. This ammo will be the first to fire. It should run 100%, unless it is cheap ammo. (Cheap ammo like bulk packs, usually have a 15% rate of bad primers.) |
I'll send this to the guy, and let him know this might be another issue, thanks! |
