I have finally decided that I need a .22 pistol. I am not looking to spend a lot of money($300 max). I am looking for some info on what is a good and reliable pistol. I really wanted a Sig Mosquito but I have not found very many good reviews for this little guy. Any and all help is appreciated.

Ruger MK-whatever (even a used MK1 is a great deal, if it's stock and not "modded" by the previous owner)

Ruger MKI/II/III/22/45 or Browning Buckmark. Most of the other options aren't worth your time.

You should be able to find a ruger mark type pistol for under $300.  They're built like friggin' tanks.

If you're interested in a more "tactical" style pistol than a Ruger MKII/III or Buckmark, check out the Ruger SR22. It's been getting good reviews.

I own a few .22 pistols.  The Ruger Mk II are tack drivers but kind of a pain to clean.  I have a Walther P22 that is a fantastic plinker and has digested a couple thousand rounds without a single hiccup.  Easy to clean and very ergonomic with the changeable backstraps on the grips.  My little Taurus 9 shot stainless revolver is a great trail gun and it digests all types of .22 ammo without a hitch that the semis have issues with (e.g. shorts, CB's, subsonic).  And I have a EAA convertible 6" Bounty Hunter SAA style that is fun to shoot but not that accurate.  So many out there to choose from.  My favorite is the Walther though, super reliable and pretty accurate.

the more target style 22 autos (buckmark, ruger standard auto) are going to shoot much more accurately and hold up better than the new wave of what I might call tactical trainer pistols (mosquito, sr22,m&p,walther etc)

While I've only had my SR22 for a couple months I see it lasting a lot longer than a Mosquito or P22. The slide is aluminum with a pinned steel breach block. That said, my MKII has seen tens of thousands of rounds, and after a detail strip a few weeks ago, looks almost brand new. Two different guns for different uses. A target .22 is great for shooting paper, or general plinking. The more tactical style pistols are better for running drills and working on DA/SA trigger manipulation.

Ruger mkIII or 22/45

Design is refined over 60 years, and folks are still shooting them from every generation.

My own 22/45 has about 20,000 rounds through it in the last 12 months, has only been cleaned twice, and has only had a handful of ammo-related mis-feeds or extractions.  Most of those rounds were shot suppressed as well, which places even more fouling and heat back into the gun.  To say that I love it, would be an understatement.

The basic 22/45 is about $250.  You can get the version that will take 1911 grips for about $270-$280.

The best part is that they are like Mr. Potato head.   You can buy aftermarket accessories that will make even the most basic ruger shoot almost like a match gun.

Ruger Mark III is the best of the breed, IMO. However, it is plagued with a magazine safety that hinders operation and a loaded chamber indicator that may reduce e reliability. Both are easily corrected, however.

The SR-22 occupies a place between the craptastic pot metal wonders and the steel target guns. It is head and shoulders above the zinc guns in design and materials.
