Has anyone added an aftermarket light rail to their 1911?
I'm thinking of having the Caspian screw on model installed on my 1991A1 so I can run a laser and light combo for a good bedside gun.  Has anyone tried that model? Successful?
The Crimson Trace at nearly 2/3 of the cost of a new 1911 has me looking for options....

Dawson makes a good screw on rail as well.  I'd recommend professional installation if you decide to go down this path.  Many people have reported being happy with their Dawson rails.

I understand the Dawsons will only allow mounting of Surefire lights unless an adapter is used.
I was thinking of a straight picatinny rail so I can mount just about anything w/o additional adapters, which I was I was wondering about the Caspian.
Also,doesn't Novak make a rail?

Holster fit isn't much of an issue.
I'd definitely go with gunsmith installation. No way I'm drilling and tapping anything visible that has to be centered and precise.

Dawson is not a Picatinny rail, and you'll be limited to the surefire x200/x300. Thats not necessarily a BAD thing... Keep in mind you'll also have to buy Dawson adapters to fit you SF lights, so figure that into your costs.

Novak does make a rail, supposedly matching the profile of an integral rail 1911. Peeps online have had to modify their holsters to fit though. YMMV.

Caspian makes one that SEEMS to be a bit lower-profile, but I have no experience to say so.

I've installed 2 Caspian rails, after a rather disastrous encounter with the CAA lightrail.  Shoulda known better...  So far, both Caspian rails have functioned perfectly and remained on the guns.

Check and make sure that you have enough clearance below the slide for the screws.  My homebuilds have plenty of space.  My father's Kimber...not nearly enough.  Next, throw out the instructions and follow these instead: http://ezine.m1911.org/nhcvt_frame.htm   Click the link "Issue 1 (Summer '06)" and then scroll down till you see the Caspian rail link.
