Has anyone ever seen one of these fail, or for that matter wear out? Seems like replacing these JUST because they are not steel is kind of a knee-jerk action to a non-existant problem.  I can see replacement if you are looking for a different style  or checkering but otherwise why bother? That's my opinion but I'm open to "schooling" if I've missed anything pertinant over the course of the last few decades.

Nope, you're spot on.  Nothing wrong with them.

I actually prefer them in the lightweight models as they cut down on weight even more.

Never seen a Colt fail.
Have seen Kimber's fail.
Different plastics.

oth My STIs are Nylon (plastic whatever), never broke.  Only reason I swapped them out on my Single Stacks was I wanted a S&A magwell added.

A former co-worker of mine had a Colt Commander with a plastic MSH that cracked all the way through.  Replaced it with a metal MSH and he was good to go.

Anyone want to do a stress test on one?

I have a Colt Delta Elite that had one. Swapped out immediately because I dislike the arched MSHs...

I broke a Kimber once on my old Custom II when re-installing the plunger pin, total stress crack.  I either recommend replacing the plastic with steel since it only costs like $30 or go to a S&A with magwell setup.

If I wanted plastic on my gun I'd buy a Glock.

I think companies that use a plastic MSH are just trying to cut cost. The Colt XSE Rail Gun I'm picking up tomorrow has one and since its an all steel gun with a rail its not like some plastic part is going to reduce the weight all that much to notice. I already have a S&A magwell/MSH waiting here for me to install and toss the plastic one in the parts bin.

I had a Kimber UCII with a plastic MSH and one day after taking it down to check out the internals I noticed the holes around the pin was getting that white stress mark you see right before plastic fails so I immediately ordered a Wilson Combat steel MSH and no more worries. They technically should have no stress due to the metal on metal contact from the hammer all the way down to the frame and the housing acting more like a guide for the mainspring and pins to slide through but it seems its not enough. I'd rather have a metal part there and not have to wonder if my MSH is holding up, requiring me to check it for cracks every now and then.
