I'm looking at getting a 1911. Main use will be for my carry weapon. But it will also be shot at the range not as much being that I have a xd40.
I dont know alot about the 1911 so any help would be great. I dont realy want to spend a lot but I dont want to go cheap either. |

Without knowing your price range, I'll second what SGB posted. Those are all good pistols that are fit for carry (I have 2 Springfield Loaded's, one is getting customized, the other is carried quite often). I would recommend the Springer and Colt first, and the Kimber second. Mainly due to warranties, but they're all gonna be good pistols. |

Don't mean to jack this thread, but I think its on the appropriate topic...
I am looking at buying my first 1911 and currently have my eye on an Auto-Ordnance WWII Parkerized 1911 that has Kimber walnut grips on it. It's my friend's and he said he'd take $325 for it. On Auto Ordnance's web site, they retail for $620, it SEEMS as if its a great deal, but I don't know if its a good pistol or not. I also know that its built to Colt's specs so I guess that may make upgrading at least a bit easier. Its not new, but I bet it has had less than 250 rounds through it. Is that a good deal or should I look somewhere else? EDIT: it also comes with 3 Kimber 7 round mags and a cheaper, no-name mag, as well as the original box, manual, warranty, etc. |

There is a lot of interesting reading about the Auto Ordnance 1911 out there. I would save an extra $200 and get a good Springfield if you want to use it for a carry piece. If you decide that the price on A.O. is too good to pass up, See if he'll let you put a couple boxes of ammo through it before you make the transaction. A real friend won't have a problem with that. |

Well, it looks like the AO 1911s are either total crap, or they are fairly solid pistols from my reading. It seems that after Kahr took over, they got a lot better and my friend's gun is one made after that. I have shot it before, several times and it was fine. No misfires, stovepipes, misfeeds, etc. I have only shot 230 gr. FMJ ammo through it though, since that's cheap and fun for high volume, college-kid-budget shooting. I am not sure that I will want to carry this though- I'll probably save up for something a bit nicer, but this will hopefully be a good trainer/fun gun until maybe a Springfield or something crazy awesome like a Wilson Combat. Does that sound like a sound judgement to you guys? |

Does that sound like a sound judgement to you guys? $325 is not a bad deal, it depends on what you think about the gun, and are you comfortable with it. I just wanted to make sure you knew alittle more about the gun, than was on the home page. I believe that you can always get what you are going to pay for it back in the future. |
