Guys ,
I am starting my search for a 1911. The gun will be a shooter and possibly a part time carry gun. Here is the brands I am looking at. Can you give me the pros and cons of each. Colt (New ones) Springfield Taurus Kimber STI Remington. I really like the two-tone black slide with stainless or nickel frame. Not sure if I want a Rail or not, it is cool but (if its say to say this here) I have never put anything on my Glock rail yet. I also want to stay with a full size gun and of course in .45 ACP. Thanks Gents. |

I haven't CCW'd a 1911 in many years, but I own several and still enjoy shooting them. The guys here who still carry them daily will likely have better advice for you than I can offer, but I'll give you my take anyway. In your situation, looking only at NIB guns (an assumption on my part here), in terms of value/relibility vs. price it is hard to beat the Springfields in my experience and opinion. OTOH, if $$$ isn't an issue I'd go with a nice custom/semi-custom gun. (Just FTR, in 1911s I have old Colts, recent SAs, a Kimber, a Taurus, and a couple of semi-custom builds for comparison's sake –– no experience at all with recent Colts or the STI.) |

Thanks Keep it coming guys The Colt, Springfield, and STI names are the ones that jump out at me from the list. (in no particular order) You just need to pick out what fits your needs and budget. They all seem to have a good CS department from what I've read. I only own two Springfields now Taurus- Meh Kimber- Nice weapons not so professional CS sometimes. Remington- I personally tend to shy away from guns that are in their first year of production. Not saying it's not a nice weapon, but I'd rather give them a year or two to work out any potential bugs. |

Lets Add Para Ord. to that list. Lets have it guys the good the bad and the ugly.. ( I would love to make it easy and just get one of each, but that can't happen) And then lets remove Para from the list. Taurus as well. Do you have a budget? Colts are good guns, as are Springfields and STIs. Kimber makes a good gun but the CS and warranty are sub-par which keeps me away. Remington's are too new and I don't like the cast frame and slide. How about a budget and then I can give you more realistic recommendations. |

Colt Choice Special Combat Government with Two-Tone finish. Here Will it be hard to obtain? Need to check with my Dealer to see if he can get Colt. Can most FFL holders get ahold of Colts? 2nd Colt XSE series, XSE Two-Tone as sell. Both in 45ACP Lets hear it guys, are the new Colts good guns and can I put a 3 dot tritium installed in these? ever better if I can do it myself. Thanks guys |

No Sig 1911 being considered? Check them out. Lot of gun for the money if you can get past it's...."different" look. I have the Stainless Target model with trijicon target night sights. Flawless since day one with about 1000 rounds through it. Good fit for a production gun and (IMHO) great trigger.
You can check out SIG's line of 1911s here. Disclaimer: All the rounds i fired through the gun were FMJ 230gr ball rounds. I post this because you mentioned in the OP that the gun may see ocational carry use. Now, when i carry my 1911, i carry it loaded with ball ammo. But, i know how a large majority of of people feel about carry ammo and most of the time that's all they carry. This is in no way the first salvo in a "carry ammo flame war" as stupid as it may sound, what i'm trying to say is: Take that 1000 round mark i posted only regarding ball ammo. The gun gun does not know what a hollow point is Here to help. J |

I have a good bit of time with 1911s of all sizes and they are my 1st choice for carry. If you want to carry it, go for an alloy commander size. If you are sure it will rarely be carried, go gov't size steel frame. In either case, a proper belt is as important as the holster.
1911 rail gun concealment holsters are few so that would impact carry. Sig 1911s do not fit a lot of standard 1911 holsters. S&W makes a good 1911 for under $1K if the external extractor makes no difference to you. Forget Taurus. If you want to go cheap go Rock Island. I would let Remington go for a year before I bought one just to see what problems there are. |

Quoted: The new Taurus 1911 has been getting great reviews... Not on this site. I have one that I like a lot and it's given me no problems, but to read some of the reviews/posts on this site you'd think that one would be better armed with a pointy stick. Just over the past weekend, I was involved in both THIS thread and THIS one... ![]() |

That is just unfair. If it is loaded then it would be heavy enough to do some serious damage if you threw it at the bad guy.

I am a Colt Kool-Aid drinker. Though I have owned 1911's from Kimber and Springfield. I always go back to my Colts. I carry a Colt Combat Commander and shoot a 70 series Colt there is a new XSE and custom 1911 on the EE right now Nice. just the info I wanted to hear. can you tell me the reason why you go back to the Colt? |

The Springfield Loaded is a great gun: http://www.springfield-armory.com/armory.php?model=8 |

My choce for going back to Colt is probably more subjective than objective.
My personal preference not withstanding that there are equal or better guns available manufactured by other companies. I have my two Colts that I shoot the majority of the time and I am good withthem. I also have a Kimber Warrior and Springfield MC |

Quoted: My choice for going back to Colt is probably more subjective than objective... No surprise, that, and nothing to apologized for –– as I point out here frequently, personal handgun choice is probably one of the most subjective decisions we will ever make. |
| Called a shop today and they Said 900 bucks plus tax for a Colt Combat elite, in two tone. I would also have to pay a 30 dollar transfer fee because this shop is out of state. I am going to my dealer tomorrow for a price quote, is this a good price. what should one expected to pay for a new colt combate elite or XSE. |

$900 + shipping + transfer (if out of state)+ tax is the running price for Colt XSE on Gunbroker
Seen $880 shipped on Gunbroker Quoted:

Doesn’t seem a lot of people consider the Smith & Wesson 1911s. Why is this? External extractor primarily? Great customer service, they've been doing the external extractor thing for a long time. Speaking only for myself: firing pin safety + external extractor + fugly styling = |

Easy guys, not because of anything said here I have dropped Taurus from my list. I have also moved para and STI off the list. I am REALLY interested in a new Colt. Others still on the list Springfield Kimber Thanks guys! Why? I'm curious about why as well. |
| Held a Colt Rail gun today very very nice gun. I just don't want a rail 1911 gonna go to the shop and order a Two tone XSE or Elite Combat from my dealer next week. I will post a another thread about education as I will need some. The shop I went to today said they are very hard to get a hold so Im kinda concerned about that but I'm not gonna give up that easy. Thanks for the suggestions guys. |
| I vote for Springfield, Kimber, and Colt, but if I were looking for a Colt I would launch a search for a series 70 Colt becasue I just think those are the best of the line, but that is just my opinion. The new re-issued series 70 has had some not so great reviews so let's not confuse the two. |

A grand or less, excellent CS if you need it, and a good looking gun away from the carbon copy Colt clones. Barrel. bushing, trigger, hammer all NM. Nice grips standard, too. |

Very true on the rail holster and SIGs don't fit many 1911 standard size. The solution for my 1911 rail full sized was a Blade-Tech. Fits perfectly. My CCO fits in a Fobus Commander style, so holsters are out there. |

So does SIG. No problems with mine. And my Hi-Power has been flawless for almost 40 years with an XX. Smith makes a nice 1911 in general, but I much prefer the SIG trigger. |
