I want to set up a spare parts kit for my new 1911's, but I don't know what parts tend to break, beyond the extractor, and spring wearing out.

So, what parts should I keep on hand?

Also, I need to know, with a Springfield Mil-Spec, should I be buying series 80 or 70 parts?

Thanks.

in order of frequency/usefulness, IMO

1. Recoil Spring(S) - every 3,000 rds
2. Magazine springs
3. Plunger tube assembly (easiest part to fly across the room and disappear)
4. Grip bushings and screws (as above)
5. Mainspring (Wilson Combat suggests annual replacement/5,000 rds as rule of thumb)
6. Firing pin spring
7. Extractor (top quality like Bulletproof and fit it when it arrives)
8. Firing pin stop plate (may require fitting... high impact part can break eventually or come loose as a remote possibility)
9. Slide stop (will require fitting)

These are off the top of my head running out the door. Yours is a pre-80 pistol so no S80 parts.

iirc SA uses a 38 super firing pin.

In my range bag i keep a spare fitted extractor, a EGW pin set, a spare slide stop. and a spare thumb safety plunger spring assy.

Home

More recoil springs than I know what to do with from 9 to 22 pound.  A few mainsprings 17 to 23 (i never change these out). and a bunch of OEM parts  guide rods all types, bushings, firing pin retain plates (egw and oem). spare extractors ( 9mm 40 45). thumb safeties, bevertails, slides, barrels, etc.

Thanks guys.

First of spare parts is inbound.

First spare parts I have is a spare pistol, even though it's a Taurus.  I figure its a decent back-up, truck gun, and one I can bugger without worrying about it

Also got extra mags (gotta get those before the mag springs ), recoil springs (lighter, and heavier), firing pin spring, extractor, etc.

I'll pick up more as I can, but I guess that's a start.

When I first started shooting 1911s I bought a lot of spare parts as well.  After over 50K rounds the only part I've broken is grip screws.
I have lost several parts during disassemble/reassembly for cleaning, but you get better at that after a while.
Recoil and firing pin springs are replaced periodically, but the recommendation of replacing the mainspring q5K rounds per WC above can't be right, perhaps q50K (got a link)
