How are these? Ive been looking to pick one up some day due to the price and the fact that its so retro looking, i love it. How would this compare to a 1200 dollar Spring i already own? Obviously not a fancy finish but how is the accuracy and reliability compared to more expensive Standard 1911's? The Price seems right to me.

me too.  I posted a similar thread and got very little help.  I posted in the wrong place.

Forged frame and slide. Pretty much a USGI pattern M1911A1 clone with the exception of the ILS mainspring housing and post-war style thumb safety. Not known for remarkable accuracy, but serviceable. 100% built in Brazil, has a two-piece barrel - not sure what model Springfield you have, but considering the price it's probably one of the American fit/finished pistols with a one-piece barrel.

I haven't messed with one in the last few years, but recent reports seem to indicate better reliability than they had a while back (I suspect they either changed or started paying more attention to the extractors).

Generally reliable and combat accurate out of the box. IMHO you would be better served to get the Mil Spec. It has a few more features for just a few more bucks. Some folks have reported issues with shooting low and heavy trigger pull which Springfield normally corrects. My Mil Spec's trigger pull was not to my liking so I swapped it out with a C&S hammer set instead of sending it back.

The Mil-Spec has better sights, beveled edges, and a lowered and flared ejection port. Otherwise, they're pretty much the same gun.

I just picked up a new one 2 weeks ago.

I'm more than impressed with it. It's got good working clearances (while not rattley) and I was shooting palm sized groups unsupported at 15yds with WWB.

It almost shoots as well as my Springfield Loaded. I'll post pics when I get home. It's actually my second GI. The first one was bought for my brother and I by my dad. I moved out after college and my brother said I could have it. It was built back in 2003. The new one has a slightly better frame to slide fit with a comparable barrel/bushing fit. The firing pin stop on the new one looks like absolute hell though. MIM marks all over it. Functions perfectly so far, though.

I'm going to modify the new one, so the FPS is nothing that I'm worried about as it's getting replaced.

Are the slide serrations also slanted forward?

On the newer version Mil-Specs they are.  If they have a serial number starting with NM they're assembled here in the U.S.

Not bad for the price.  It's where I started with 1911's.  I did change out my mainspring so it no longer had that ugly curved tumor.

The GI's are vertical.

Here's my 2 GI's. The top one was built in 2003 and the bottom one was bought new just 2 weeks ago.

Older GI firing pin stop.

New GI firing pin stop. I'm not impressed witht this part at all. They could have done much better with it, but it's gonna be replaced with an EGW oversized FPS when I start to modify it, so I don't care about it as much. Especially since it works as is.

GI's are a great starter pistol, but the added features of the mil-spec might be up your alley more. Personally, I wanted vertical slide serrations and minimal roll marks, and I wanted this gun to give the impression of an upgraded USGI pistol.

I have a Mil-spec but have shot the GI model. If your going for retro you cant get a better one IMO.

Are you going to leave it like it is or do some mods?

I think you're better off to get with the Mil-Spec over the GI. Everyone I know who has used a GI has had issues with the brass often hitting them in the head. I think the Mil-Spec's improved ejector and ejection port + dot sights are well worth the extra cash.

I just wish it had the straight cocking serrations.

While I agree with you on this, I have never had any problems with getting hit with brass. I also have never had any issues with the standard ejection port, except on some under powered reloads that the cases were streched on.

I have the Champion.  Accuracy was better than expected with the GI sights at 15yds using 185gr lswc loads tailored for my bullseye gun.  The trigger sucked and was replaced with a 3.5lb kit.
ETA - Had some misfeeds due to the bullet type.

I have a MilSpec and love it.  And yeah, nearly the same piece.  It's a lot better to take out in the woods than something that's significantly more expensive.  I keep one on me in case I need to finish off a deer/hog that doesn't realize it's already dead.  Also good just in case you come across a mean critter (or person) in remote places.  We have lots of thorns on our trees and bushes here and better to have them tearing up the grip of your GI / MilSpec than your Custom or whatever.  I've never done anything to mine and it shoots a couple inches low and a little right at 25m with cheap 230gr FMJ.  Still a little low and right at 10m, so probably partially me.

If I were going for "old school" novel gun, I would roll with a Rock Island Armory GI.

It will do anything the Springer will do for $100 less money.  Both are decent guns.  Both have crappy sights.  My RIA has done everything I've asked of it, no complaints at all.

I realize they've got an excellent rep. Hell, I'd like to pick one up to plink (9mm Tactical).

I just find that you get a much better fit and finish with the Springfield GI's and they have better steel if you choose to build upon it.
