I've got that series 70 Colt Government 1911 my grandpa gave me, and I want to order some wilson combat mags for it.
I want whatever the stock capacity is, so the mags fit flush with the bottom of the grip. Do I order 7 rounders or 8 rounders? I'm not ever going to carry it CCW, just for the occasional trip to the range to launch some .45 ACP. |

Having a little bit of a thick baseplate is okay, I only have the one original magazine with the gun, and don't really want to shoot with it. I just want to make sure I don't have like an inch of magazine sticking out of the bottom of the gun. Depends on the base plate from wilson but they will stick below the gun 3/32 to 1/4 (all approx). Metalform and tripp, both make reliable true flush fit (within .010 approx) magazines. |
| Since you aren't carrying it, you can try whatever variety of stock magazines, perhaps Chip Mc Cormicks or Tripp Research (if they make a standard USGI), or of course, the standard Colt replacements. Wilson Combat and Tripp Premium magazines are NOT flush fitting, and for good reason. Last thing one wants is a flush-fitting mag to wrestle with on a high-stress reload. Since this isn't a concern, I would go with nickel or blued factory replacements. |
| I believe the first design to do this sucessfully was the Wilson-Rodgers design, which got the 8th round by massaging 7 round mags. This was done with a modified spring and different follower. These two mods took up less real-estate in the tube and gave the mag an extra round. Some have argued that the reliability is compromized compared to the standard 7rd design, however. |
