I have a Colt Mark IV series 70 that I used to use to shoot Steel Challenge. I have stopped competition shooting a few years ago.  The gun had a compensated barrel. I removed tha comp barrel and installed a stock barrel that I had.

When the stock barrel was replaced, the rear of the slide overhangs the frame about 1/16 of an inch. Is this due to an improperly fitted barrel???Maybe a barrel link that is the wrong size???

I want to return the gun to a stock look.

One of the two or possibly both, IMO.

try borrowing a couple of other 1911 barrels and see how they do when you reassemble your pistol. I believe how you file/cut in the bottom lug of the barrel has a lot to do with how the slide fits the frame. but I'm shure there can be other factors as well.

If the barrel that you put in is not the original barrel then you will probably have to have it fitted which may include taking material off the lugs.

I didn't think about that. I will try the barrel from my Kimber. I shot the gun with a compensated barrel for years. I don't have the original barrel anymore. If I determine that I need a new barrel, where can I get a quality replacement. I'm not looking to get a Wilson or anything super expensive. Just a barrel that will return the gun to a good reasonably accurate, reliable shooter.

Kart barrels are only ~$120 and they're used in $4000 custom builds.

Good enough for me

I prefer Kart also. Bar-Sto and Nowlin are also excellent.

If I recall the Series 70 used a Collette Bushing to stabilize the barrel. I do not recall if the barrel was anything special. If need be I can dig a original one I have out and compare anything in detail if it will help.

It was different and called an "Accurizer" barrel.

Brownells sells the Springfield 2-piece barrels for around $60-65 each. Aside from getting a mil-surp bbl or one that someone junked when they upgraded, this might be your cheapest option, IMO.

I installed the barrel from my Kimber. Everything looks to fit perfect. The slide stops even with frame, and the barrek appears to fit perfect. Where is the best place tp buy a drop in assembly that will fit with no gunsmithing work?

I do not think that I can properly fit a barrel, without destroying it.

Like has been said, get a Kart Easy Fit.  You can do it yourself, and it will fit perfect when your done.  They are not that expensive.
