I am looking at an AMT Hardballer which is a stainless steel 1911A1 .45 Auto clone.
Some years ago during a conversation at a gun store I heard that these pistol just don't work! Or, you would be lucky to find one that runs reliably.
Has anyone here owned one of these pistols or have any first hand info on the quality of these guns?
Are they exact dedicated 1911 clones?
I don't see them for sale very often but when I do they are perdy cheap.
Any info on the AMT 1911A1 .45 auto clone will be appreciated.

Another question, Do you know if the Taurus PT1911 is a dedicated 1911A1 clone?

Thanks in Advance

Yes to the Taurus question.  Can't help you on the AMT other than I've never heard anything good about them.  I suspect there is a very good reaason they failed in the market place.

Everything I've heard about the AMT has been negative.  I had to do some research for a friend and no one had a single thing good to say about them...I might even think about not taking one if someone was giving it to me.

I bought one before I knew any better. It was also pretty cheap! Actually the gun shot pretty well. Until the barrel lugs sheared off one fine afternoon.

I then had a competent smith fit a new kart barrel and bushing. He told me the metal on the gun was very soft. I sold it shortly thereafter.

Buy a used Springer or Colt 1991A1 if you are on a budget.

My Hardballer was a Jam-O-Matic. Worst gun I have ever owned. Looked good though.

Seemed to work okay for Arnie.

AMT went through a succession of owners, making wildly varying degrees of crap over their lifetime, none of which I would care to be saddled with.

A friend of mine bought one in the early 90's. He/we shot the hell out of it and didn't have any problems that couldn't be traced directly to his handloads.

The frame (I'm guessing) was cast and had LOTS of pores that looked like hell.

Like I said he had no problems with the gun until he sent it to a "Hack" gunsmith to have adjustable sights put on and the guy really butchered it so he let it go for next to nothing.

Friend of mine bought a used Combat model (it was stamped #? of 2500) for $250 a many years ago. He's still shooting the heck out of it, and quite accurately, I might add.  He's never had a problem with it.

Ever wonder why the 1911 has such a notorious reputation for being unreliable?

AMT is probably responsible for 40% of that reputation.

A buddy of mine has one and it runs great. Only problem he has with it is it doesnt lock the slide back on an empty mag..
I took the slide catch out of my Kimber and it fit and functioned 100%..
