I have a Springfield mil-spec top end I plan on putting on a custom frame(thinking either Caspian or Fusion). While I had the complete Springfield pistol, I never had a problem with it whatsoever. However in preparation for this project, I started measuring things in the fitment of the barrel to the slide. What I found was that eh barrel has what I can only describe as too much lockup. It is sitting high in the slide causing the firing pin to contact the primers low of center. I realize this is not really a major concern in the operation of the pistol, but as I am going to build one up, and am a little on the retentive side, what, if anything, can be done to correct this, short of fitting a new barrel to the slide??
Thanks for any advise you all can provide. I have read Gaspians build thread and learned quite a lot from it, but could not find anything pertaining to my issue anywhere. |

It's very unlikely to lock up tight in a new frame. Weld up the lugs and refit will give you offset firing pin strike. Will need a longer link that will give you some challenges getting it timed, and throated to feed. You can bush the firing pin hole in the breachface to recenter it, but at this point just starting with a match barrel makes a lot of sense.

You might be able to re-cut the barrel feet, but you must make sure there is still enough depth on the barrel lugs with the reduced height. It could also be a tolerance stack problem and you need a new barrel. You can take measurements and do a little math to determine if you can take off more of the barrel feet and still have good lug engagement. Barrel lug depth can be checked by placing clay in the slide recesses and then putting the gun together. The clay will be squashed by the barrel lugs and you can tell how much engagement is present as a check after cutting metal away. The problem is putting it back if you need to. |

Thanks for all the replies guys. I have measured the upper lug engagement in the slide and have .052" lockup there, so theoretically I could cut the feet to get it to sit lower. But I think I'll get a new barrel and fit it to the slide and frame together. Although I will test it with this barrel as it is the original Springfield barrel in the original Springfield slide and I never had any problems with it, just never noticed the low firing pin strike.
Appreciate the help. |
