So we replaced the Main Spring Housing on my Kimber Compact Carry (Officer's Grip, 4in Barrel) over the weekend and ever since then we have not been able to get all of the pieces back together and have the Grip Safety work. The thumb safety works fine but holding the slide with the hammer down and using one finger to pull the trigger it will still go off.

To the best of my and my smith's knowledge (after examining the weapon) the weapon is factory, no modifications to the Grip Safety, Main Spring or any portion covered under. We have also attempted to use a different grip safety and main spring with the same result, we are all baffled and I have had 4 different people look at it to know avail.

Any Suggestions??

Thanks in advance,

Tried the Gunsmithing section but no response in 24hrs

To start .................. is your "smith" a real "Smith" or a bubba "smith"

when you say mainspring are you talking about the coil spring
in the mainspring housing or are you talking about the sear spring
(three finger leaf spring)?

This....

Maybe their is a person on here that lives close to you that can hook up and look at it for you.  Someone that knows what they are doing.  This is usually a simple fix.

If they were really "Smiths" we wouldn't be diagnosing this problem on the internet ........ been my experiance that there are lot's of people who call themselves a "Smith" that really shouldn't

A) are you 100% sure it was working prior to the mainspring housing replacement?

B) remove the mainspring housing retaining pin and drop the mainspring housing down about 1/4 ". Now check to see if the grip safety is now blocking the trigger. If it is then you have to remove some material off the inside of the ears at the top of the mainspring housing. If not check to insure that you have sufficient sear spring pressure against the grip safety to insure it is fully extending. If the grip safety is fully extending but not blocking the trigger you need to install & fit a new grip safety.

The last reply is correct. I would check the sear spring carefully. It may have been bent slightly so the grip safety is not extending fully. You could try slightly bending the right most arm out slightly and reassembling and safety check again.

Either your Sear spring (Three leafed spring) is installed wrong or the leaf that makes contact with the grip safety is bent improperly. Or, the arm of the grip safety that makes contact with the sear spring is worn (or has been polished too much) and is allowing for the bypass...

I had this exact situation with a Smith and Alexander MSH Magwell funnel I installed in a Kimber TLE II. The "ears" on the MSH weren't allowing the grip safety to protrude out of the frame enough to allow it to function. A few passes with a file fixed it right up.

I agree, I know I posted something different earlier, but SGB's explanation makes the most sense. Said gun was in proper working order prior to the mainspring housing change and now post change doesn't work...
