Colt XSE.
I personally carry a Kimber TLE most days, but also rotate in my Custom Colt 70, and Colt XSE (Combat Elite) some days. Colts have a slightly more loose frame to slide fit which I feel will help with reliability. I would go Colt if I were you. Combat Elite, or Rail Gun if you don't mind the rail. |

Not saying it's the best but I use a Kimber Compact CDP II, I like the lightweight of the aluminum frame, it works for me. After some intial troubles with the recoil spring, it now runs reliable enough for every day carry.
Otherwise I'm really fond of any Commander style 1911, but especially the aluminum framed ones and Bobtails are really sweet. When I win the lottery I'm going to Bobtail a LW Colt. |

What holster is that? I carry my Combat Elite XSE in a Milt Sparks VM-II. |

IMO, your most modest investment should NOT be your CCW. There's nothing wrong with overly-elaborate range toys and a more spartan CCW if it adequately addresses all practical needs (including being comfortable/fun enough to dedicate the bulk of your practice).
If you are not shy about larger platforms, I would suggest you go with a Commander, which gives you a little more carry comfort over 5" 1911s, but it feels and performs similarly with less maintenance woes and more likelihood of locally stocked parts than its smaller counterparts. If Baer costs too much, then the Colts are fine choices provided they have the proper sights and other basic ammenities such as basic reliability and/or dehorning services. |

I'd recommend a Dan Wesson Commander Classic Bob-Tail for a good reliable CCW weapon. A nice Colt would work too, and if you don't mind bull barrels you can look at the LW Champion from Springfield or the Pro Carry series from Kimber.
I agree with Pulpsmack that your CCW should not be your cheapest or most modest weapon since you will be relying on it to save your life or the life of people around you, but I also agree with you that all the bells and whistles are not required on such a weapon. A reliable piece with good sights, a good de-horn job and a good holster will get you pretty far. To be honest though, depending on your body type you can pretty easily conceal a full-size 1911 in the right holster, I wouldn't rule out a 5" model just yet. |
