Ok, first thing I screwed up by letting a friend who supposedly knew what he was doing try to put some night sights on my 1911. In his defence he has done several before so I thought it would be ok. Well the front went ok, no problems. The rear not so good. Long story short, I've got a busted Novak rear sight which he is gonna replace and a really scratched up slide. I put the slide on a comparator at work and discovered the rear dovetail is only 40 degrees not 60, which explains the reason it wont fit. I plan on putting it in a mill and running a 60 degree dovetail cutter through it to clean it up, and bead blasting the whole damn slide to get the scratches out. My question is on reparking the slide. How hard is it, or would I be better off leaving it bead blasted?

I know I should have taken the gun to a smith to get the sights put on, but I trusted him as he has done dozens with no problems. Nothing I can do about that now.

Also I bought some Chip Mc Cormick mag from Midway. I cant get the base plates on. The screws won't start at all. Anybody else have this problem with the base plates before or am I just having some shitty luck?

I would send it off and have it refinished. At the same time, have my sights properly installed.

I have never had an issue with them.  I think they are 4-40 threads so you could tap them first rather than trying to get the self tapping screws to work.

Thanks guys,  any reccomendation on who to send it to?  Will try to run a tap in the holes on the mags when I get back to work monday night. Got a ton of taps in my box.

Parkerizing isn't hard as long as you pay attention to the details and don't rush the process.

As sigman68 has noted tapping the holes (I believe 4-40 is correct) should solve your problem.

So first thought you mention blasting it and parking or just leaving it blasted...

What is the slide made from?  Assuming it can be parked then you wouldn't want to leave it just blasted as it will be a rust magnet.

Assuming you could leave it just blasted and not park it, would mean it's stainless and can't be parked anyway...

However assuming it is parkable then it's quite easy to do.

1. Order some Park Solution from Midway or wherever
2. break out or borrow a camp stove (burner on a gas BBQ works well too)
3. stainless pan.
4. heat
5. dip
6. rinse
7. oil

Those are the basics...

I suggest doing more research on proper rear Novak Lo-Mount installation first.

The dovetail required is 65° x .500.

There is a fair description here, but IMO some of the measurements are ambiguous.    The dovetail should be cut with the center of the mill spindle .770" forward from the rearmost surface of the slide.

I did this with a bunch of magazines recently. I figure why chance it with the screws when it's easy enough to just pass a 4/40 tap in the holes first. Worked like a charm.
