The pistol is a Springfield 1911 loaded model completely stock using the Springfield magazines it came with.  There have been around 1000 rounds through it with minimal problems.  However, today I start getting lots of failures to eject with both reloaded and factory ammo.  During the first 50 rounds, it seemed like the failures were random, but near the end of my session it was consistently failing to eject the last round in the magazine.

The pictures below show what all the failures to eject looked like.  The case got jammed in.  Couldn't rack the slide or drop the magazine so I had to take a key and sort of pry the case out.  I fired about 100 rounds today and there were around 10 that failed to eject in this manner.

Yup, sounds like you don't have enough extractor tension.  Last round is getting crunched because the extractor doesn't have enough ass to hold onto the casing, and there is no round in the magazine to help hold the casing up.  You could try and re-tension it, but a new extractor might be your best bet.  Or you could go through Springfield and they will most likely fix it under warranty.

ETA:  This might help if you want to DIY:  http://www.m1911.org/technic2.htm

Call up Springfield Armory and ask for a call tag because your extractor is busted. Wait an hour or so and it will arrive in email. Send it in with a nice letter. Get it back in a week or so. Make sure you also write down other stuff you want done...they will usually do it for free.

Just get rid of the cheap crappy SA Extractor and replace it with a quality tool steel one instead of putting another MIM SA one in.

Seriously, SAs MIM extractors are cheap and will not hold a set worth a damn. Poor use of the MIM process.

Try a Wilson Bulletproof one. Heck, my stash of USGI one's work better then SAs do. [And my stash is getting pretty thin]

What he said. Send it back..request for a Wilson Bullet Proof extractor and offer to pay for it. Done. I have the Wilson Combat extractor in my gun so I forgot to mention it. Have the Custom Shop Professional.

Thanks, I think I'll go this route.  I don't paying a little extra for a lot more reliability.

If you have a competent gunsmith near I would buy an extractor have a local smith set the tension on it.  I got mine done for $15 labor and I provided a Wilson bullet proof extractor.

If the pistol was by another maker, then yes your advice is sound. Being a Springfield your very best option is to use Springfield's shop. That's not opinion, it's fact that's been precedent in many posts by Springfield owners.

Setting up an extractor is not that hard to do.

Right you are Shadowcop. What Springfield does for it's clients is on a different level. Like blueing extractor and blending to match slide or extra mods. I don't know or can't predict what the Springfield shop will do but I've never read anything except Springfield did more than was asked. For free. That's pretty hard to pass up.

Bummer man. No doubt extractor. Take that Springfield mag and tell them to take it back as credit for your new (non-SA) extractor.
