Well I'm going to take the plunge and I've decided to have a 1911 built by a expert gunsmith in the area of St. Louis.  Now I have to decide if I want my first 1911 to be a full size or a commander size slide.  What do you guys think? I'm also partial to the commander size bobtail models too.

I would suggest a government but that is because I like the full size and the shortened barrel does not give you any huge advantages on concealing.  It does give you shorter sight radius and the pistol does not look balances IMO.

My vote goes for Govt.

I have a commander size Nighthawk Talon II bobtail and a full size Nighthawk Vickers tactical and a Wilson Combat built on a full size , all are reliable and accurate. The experts say a 5 inch gun is the best, but a bobtail commander is a breeze to carry on an inside the waistband holster. If the gun is a full time carry gun get a CBOB but if you want a nice 1911 get a full size.

If it is going to be a carry gun, go Commander. Otherwise go full size.

I have both commander and Gov't............for carry I would say go with the commander...........they seem more balanced to me.........Or go government for the classic style..............

If your partial to the Commander with the bobtail. Sounds like you might have answered your own question. If it were me I would go commander. But thats because I already have a 2 fullsize. Also for concealment the shorter slide may be a bit overrated. It's not that much shorter. and the grip is what really "prints"

again, if it is for carry, go with commander.
I used to be of the same mind set, full size carry all the way. Got to try my uncle's commander and discovered, my pants don't pinch as much sitting down. That 3/4 of an inch really does make a difference.
Tried his officers, but decided I wasn't happy with the 3 inch barrel.
My next gun will have a commander slide. Just debating if it will be a cco or just a plain commander.
