Hi guys!

I am new to the 1911, so please be kind.

I just picked up a used Series 70 Colt Combat Commander. It is in pretty good shape but has a few issues. I want to address them before trying to fire it. I noticed when disassembling it that the barrel was difficult to remove since the barrel link does not go forward completely and when I do get it forward enough to remove the barrel, it sticks. It also sticks when reassembling the slide. Shouldn't the link move freely in both directions and not stick? Can I just push out the barrel link pin and polish up the link a bit? Any advice appreciated.

Also for some reason, the previous owner changed out the hammer to a standard govt model spur type. I have ordered a new Commander type hammer from Brownells. Is this a simple install I can do myself? I have studied the process online and it looks easy enough. Should I replace the sear and disconnector as well, or is that necessary?

Appreciate any help. I am looking forward to getting this guy running, but safety first.

Thanks!

Not sure what you should do about the link, mine flop around with no resistance to them.

As far as the hammer goes, it is easy to install, but it needs to be fitted to the sear with exacting angles. Not generally something that can be done free-hand without a lot of luck. Best bet would be to buy the hammer (and sear if you want a new one) and drop it off at a gunsmith in your area. If there aren't any close, Springfield Armory works on many brands of 1911's in their shop and can do the work for a resonable price and a decent turnaround time.

Good luck!
