My slide has the GI rear cut and stake on front sight.  Can the rear dovetail be machined for either a bo-mar or Novak rear cut?

Yes..I just my Colt Combat Commander slide cut for the Novak rear...I'm hoping to have in the next few days, I'll post pics so you can see what it looks like.

It can be milled for either, but be aware that if you go with the Bo-mar cut, you have exactly one option if you ever decide to go to a fixed sight.   IMO, the Novak rear Lo-mount cut accepts the widest array of quality aftermarket sights.

I got another question...

how in the HELL is one supposed to know what height front sight he should get for a given rear sight?

Good point..I'm putting a 10-8 rear on my Colt, which takes the Novak cuts.

Purchase high and file down, or contact the manuf of the sights tell them what you have what load you shoot and they may just be able to help you out.

My problem is that I did have a set of Meprolights...rear sight was adjustable and went into the GI rear cut, front site was a stake on.  Front sight wasn't well staked and flew off the other day.

To avoid this problem, I'd prefer to go to a dovetailed front sight.  Have no idea which one I should get, and the height of the Mepro front blade isn't published anywhere on the web, at least that I can find.

Is this a 4" or 5" gun?  Most of my 5" .45s use a .175" tall front sight.

5"

I'm just wondering if the sight isn't abnormally tall, however.  The adjustable rear sight fitted into a GI rear cut appears to sit pretty high, although that may be an illusion due to the nature of the dovetail.
