I am relativly new to the 1911, I know a bit but Im no expert.

Walked into my dealer today and he has an Auto Ordnance 1911 Competeion gun, used in good shape for $500.

Im thinking about it. I know that AO isnt crap, but its not the best either.

Id appreciate if everyone could fill me in ont this company and this model if at all possible.

Thanks.

$500 for a used AO is recockulous.  Shop wisely Grasshopper and you can find a new Springfield for that much.  My only experience with AO is with a friend who has one, it's reasonably accurate and fairly reliable as long as you retension the extractor every 50 rounds.

Sorry, I don't know what happened with the previous post.....  Any way, I bought an AO GI a couple of years ago NIB for $425. It is accurate as hell. @ 25 yrds it is putting out 1.5" groups. It's a tack driver!!!!!  I don't know anything about anything else they make. Mine is a very tight gun though....

Your first clue should be the fact that nobody uses Auto Ordnance anything in competition.

I believe Auto Ordinance frames are investment cast, not forged.

I believe you are correct. They dont fit their guns very well either. I saw one at my local gun shop in Las Vegas. It was returned 3 times and Auto Ordnance could not repair it. For some damn reason the gun liked to go full auto. Never found out what happened. The fit and finish on the gun was sloppy. Save your money and yourself from a headache, buy a different reputable brand. Colts are pretty good...just a little sharp around the edges. Springfield Armory 1911's or Smith and Wesson's are about the only 1911's that will give you the least amount of headaches. If you do have issues their Customer service are top notch and will take care of you by paying for the shipping to them and back to you.

Sounds like a lot of advice/opinions from folks who never owned an Auto Ordnance Competition model.

I just recently traded my AO Comp model as I no longer use it for pin matches.  It functioned flawlessly for me for years and thousands of rounds.  It was purchased new some time ago for about $550, came with a compensator that replaced the bushing, full length guide rod, beveled mag well, extended slide stop and extended/enlarged mag release.  Most guys running 'race gun' 1911s at the pin matches spent a hell of a lot more than I did, and could almost keep up with me .

I played with it a bit and moved it to be a more 'stock' model with standard bushing and guide rod and it still functioned well.  All parts were standard and fit fine.  The only thing that could have been better was the trigger.  It wasn't bad, but did have just a slight creep to it.  I never had it worked on, but it may have been something that could have been improved if I decided I wanted to spend the money and downtime...but I didn't.

For me, it was a nice investment for the price.  With today's pricing, used at $500 is reasonable, but I would see if they would take a little less.  I wouldn't let the lack of name recognition scare you away.  It is not a concealed carry piece and it wasn't meant to be.  It worked well for me for its intended purpose.

Cast frames......Caspian comes to mind...yet you won't hear people bash them...all manufacturers of all products have lemons...nature of the business...quotas...This AO Pitbull never failed before I made the mods, or after, carry it daily
