Recently ordered my first ever Colt. Should pick it up Tuesday. No negative feelings toward Colt, just never had one. Not new to 1911's, have owned five and still have three...all SA...GI, Milspec and TRP. Have really been wanting a 'Commander' size gun and wound up going with the 'original', so to speak. Ordered a stainless S80 Commander. Paid $790 OTD.
Previously owned a Kimber Pro Raptor II, and sold it after deciding it was a bit too gimmicky for me and decided I didn't want a Swartz safety gun. I know, I know....S80 Colts have basically the same thing...but trigger activated. That's a whole other discussion anyway. What I really did want is a true 4.25" barrel Commander. Would be interested to hear from those having personal experience with this gun....good or bad. Oh, and Edge...before you get the chance...I think the black plastic grips will go. Gonna see how a set of Hogue wraparound's look on this one! |
| +1 on Wizzo's comment about the edges. Had a stainless Combat Commander a couple of years back. Fit and finish was great, but after one 500 round range session, my hands were bleeding. Had it de-horned and it worked like a champ. good luck with your first Pony. It won't be your last. |
| Honestly I have not been pleases with any Colt I have touched in the past 6 months. The fit was mediocre at best, needed to be dehorned bad, and like others said some edges were sharp but was not concerned much about that. Just for the price you pay on a Colt I would want something that is nice. |
| I had a series 70 for a day. It certainly wasn't lacking in the asthetics department, but it was in the fit. I compared it side by side with my Clackamas Kimber and sold it. To be fair, last week I looked at a series 70 gold cup and thought it was pretty decent. Looked great, but it doesn't compare to my other 1911's. |
Some people think a Colt is perfect out of the box and there is nothing wrong with that... . At All.. . .. Others like myself feel like it's a solid foundation to build on. Irregardless a Colt has the right lettering on the slide. COLT. The standard by which all 1911s are judged on. Congratulations on your new Colt.

Quoted: ...Just for the price you pay on a Colt I would want something that is nice. That's another thing that I wonder about. One would think that all Colts sell for over a $1000 but they simply don't although I have (more than once) foolishly paid too much when I wanted instant gratification. I have seen more SAs and Kimbesr with what I call high prices then what I have seen on Colts. Maybe I need to look for more higher priced dealers. |
| I don't mind paying a bit of a premium for a Colt that I can inspect firsthand to avoid getting one that shouldn't have been passed by the orangutans in Colt's QC department. Lately, I have seen too many of those, most having off-center recoil spring tunnels, some having worse. |

Congrats on the gun........Im sure it will be fine and the price is fine.. Man I wanted one of those Raptors.. Awsome looking guns.... But have to agree with this post , well at least the Few I have seen Im not impressed with.. MY Colts are older ones...... the sayings such as "Colt is the original " and the other sayings are garbage. Dont mean anything .. Colt is a middle of the line 1911.. there are many below it and many above it..... Quoted:

There you go, yep ..its a solid foundation to "BUILD ON"...... Have to agree with you there..

Every new Colt I've handled had edges on it straight from the Gillette razor company... I have never had that. I guess I must be missing out on something. It's only my observation of 6-8 of them on Saturday. Mostly XSE's at the Indy 1500. Bottom edges of the slides were sharp! I still plan to get one eventually though ![]() Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| After more than two decades of lusting after a Colt 1911, I bought a new Colt Commander about two years ago and could not be happier. More accurate then my Beretta 92 and 100% reliable so far. The blueing and fit and finish are excellent. Paid around $850 for it. |

Picked up the gun last night.
My observations..... 1. Fit and Finish is excellent. 2. Slide/Frame nice and tight. NO movement whatsoever. 3. Action is solid and smooth. 4. NO SHARP EDGES (in fact, very nicely smoothed out. My SA Milspec has sharper edges) 5. Great price for the quality, IMO. 6. Trigger is better than I expected. Hope to get to the range tomorrow. If it shoots as well as I would expect, considering the apparent quality of build, I'm gonna be very happy. |

Range Report....
First, I have to say one thing.....WOW! This pistol is very nice! Fired 125 rds with a mix of Win Ranger T 230gr +P, Win SXT 230gr, Rem UMC 230gr Ball and Magtech 230gr Ball. Used 3 different Colt mags (also new). NOT ONE SINGLE ISSUE. Ran flawlessly, as we like to say around here. Shot from 25 feet only. Absolutely could not miss. Truth is, I only threw one round (high and slightly right). Nothing but one big raggedy hole wherever I wanted. I'm an average to good shooter IMO, but I felt like a badass today. Had two different guys stop and ask what I had. Got the typical "Man, that thing is a friggin' tack driver" comments. Bottom line....I know very little about Colts. But, I can assure you this is one bad Mofo right straight out of the box. Damn I'm glad I decided on the Commander. Anyway, that's my experience with my first Colt. |
