My father passed away very recently. My brother and I inherited his weapons and I have been trying to figure out some of the values for my insurance company.
One has me stumped. It's dad's old Colt Super .38 Automatic.
The serial number is 95xxx. According to the Proofhouse site it was made in 1952.
When I looked up similar pistols on Gunbroker I found widely varying prices.
Sometime in the past it looks like dad changed a few things on it. It has a beveled mag well/arched checkered MSH and what looks like a homemade extended mag release.
Everything else looks original and the bluing is almost perfect. The only place where it's worn is the grip safety.

Can someone give me a ballpark value so I can add it to my home insurance?

Thanks,
Jim

I'd say $800... that should get you in the ballpark.

If your looking for insurance value, wouldn't you want to go with the highest prices found?

colts are a funny thing.
Any modification drives the price down to about what a new equvilant would run today.
Any damage drives it down further to shooter catagory.

1950's commercial colts are generally regarded as fine weapons and are worth more than 70 series guns. In good condition fetching well over 1k.

But see the second sentence.
Once the gun has been modded, most people consider it a hack job, unless you can prove a named gun smith did the work.

For insurance. I would value it at 1500, because that is what it would take min to get another 1950's colt in 38 super.

If you were selling it,  you might get that 800 mentioned above. But probably closer to 600.

Most insurance companies go off of replacement value.... I'd insure it in the upper third of the price ranges your seeing on Gunbroker.

If it were me I'd insure it @ $1200.00.

The reason, other than insurance, I wanted to check is that I saw one on Gunbroker for over $2k. If this was worth that much I probably wouldn't shoot it much.
If it's at or under $1k it will see some range time.

As far as mods the only things I can see are the extended mag button, and extended slide stop I forgot to mention and the mag well/ MSH.
If it was really valuable I might try to return it to original condition, but it sounds like I might leave it as is and shoot it.
It also has a B-Square scope mount that uses 2 set screws and a screw replacing the slide stop. I have one just like it on an SA Loaded I use in matches and it isn't premament.

+1

Seems about right, IMO.
