I heard from a reputable source that a barrel length under 4.5" compromises the gun's reliability.  What are your thoughts and experiences on this?

It's 4 1/4 and under. Ie: The Colt Commander is the smallest you can go and still expect full reliability.

Not that the Officer's length guns can't be reliable. They just require more attention to detail, maintainence, and higher quality parts. The chance of failure is much greater.

How much does a bobtail effect the price?

This is for a carry gun.

I think the cutoff is 4".  I have a Kimber Pre-Series I Compact Stainless that has never bobbled.
