Is there any way to replace the sites on a Springfield GI .45 without gunsmithing? I originally bought one because it was interesting, but sometimes I want nicer sites. It doesn't look like the front site can be removed easily.
maybe I should have just bought a mil-spec |

Have a smith put some proper sight dovetails on there.
Either that or get some LPAs and tear the old sights out. The rear sight base will need to be filed considerably. The front sight will need to have the crap beat out of it and then be filed down. After that you'll have some VERY nice, VERY accurate adjustable sights. I've got about 300 rounds through mine since the LPAs were installed. Despite the fact that I did a halfassed job on the front sight, it's still there and solid as a rock. The sights proved their accuracy to me when I was able to keep 50 rounds in the a bullseye the size of an orange at 45 feet, shoot rapid fire. All that said, I'd prefer dovetails. I don't trust that front sight completely yet. But...it's not like there are never reports of dovetail sights walking out or breaking either... |

Bit the bullet and have a good gunsmith dovetail in some proper sights... staked sights are just waiting to launch themselves into orbit at the worse possible moment. yeah if i was going to change out the sites i would drop a dime and get them dovetailed in. |
| Sent mine away to Novak for some night sights. Patiently waiting for them to get back but there really is no option other than send it to Springfield and get them to do it or ( they will install the Novak sights ) Or send it directly to Novak themselves. I will post up a pic when it comes back |

in a similar vein of this thread. with regards to the Springfield GI 1911, is it possible to upgrade it to a custom level gun? or should one buy something like the operator and have it worked on? You can definitely upgrade the GI. I'd recommend a reliability job from a reputable smith. You can also send it to Springfield's custom shop for some work. I plan to buy a mil-spec soon to do a total upgrade on (wikipedia MEU-SOC 1911 and you'll see what I mean). |
| I do a lot of my own work on all my guns, but I also bit the bullet and sent my GI to Harrison Design and Consulting for Service 115––"Supply & install Yost Bonitz 'retro' rear sight with staked in serrated ramp front sight. Cost me under $130 including shipping. It still looks reasonably "traditional". |

I'm tagging this one because I'm interested in doing the same thing with my mil Spec. What was the final cost to have Novak put them on with the cost of the sights included? They have a package deal at $179.90 for the dovetail carry installed at Novak. Springfield will do the same service for $260.00 but they use the low mount sights. |

Yeah thanks, I think Trijicon has GI bladded rear and staked front night sights for the GI mil specs. You just have to have a gunsmith install the front stake. I'd love to do it myself, but you need some specialized tools to do it. Theses are the ones I'm looking at http://www.trijicon.com/user/parts/products1.cfm?PartID=25&back_row=2&categoryID=7 |
