Well it's time to start shopping for my second 1911 pistol. I used to own a Para 14.45 LDA but I have since decided I will be better served with a railed single stack 1911. The gun will not be used for CC but may be required to fill in as a backup for home defense. I am currently considering the Colt Rail Gun (based on their Government model) or the Springfield MC Operator. Which one would you want on the nighstand? The price range on these two should be $1100.00 or less but please let me know of any other 1911's in this price/quality range. A poll may prove helpful but I don't know how to set one up.
Thanks

I saw the Colt Rail Gun at the fun show this weekend. $980 on the price tag. I know it's my next 1911.

If I had to go buy a railed single stack today, it would be the Colt Rail Gun.

I don't see night sights listed on the Colt, nor an ambi safety. These are included with the MC Op.

I own an MC Operator, and its been a great pistol.

No night sights but I believe all XSE's come with ambi saftey.

The last one I fondled had both ambidextrous safety and night sights.  I believe my next firearms purchase will be a Colt Rail Gun.

Colt's web sight lists extended ambi safety and Novak white dot carry sights. Don't think they are "night" sights but I suppose they can always be replaced. I have read a few bad things about Colt's quality control. Anyone purchased anything "flawed" from Colt recently or is this a non issue?

I think it's a non-issue.

I bought a New Agent in May '08, have run ~2000 rds through it to date, and never had any problems. Colt did a recall recently on some pistols, which included the New Agent line. It was sent back to the factory (at their expense) and it came home with a new thumb safety and recoil spring assembly in a week's time. I'd say that they stand behind their product line.

If I didn't already have a Kimber Desert Warrior, I'd get the CRG for the enhanced XSE features. I may pay a 'smith to do those features on the Kimber later on. Regarding ambi safeties, unless it's retained in the same manner as King's 201A, Kimber's ambi, or maybe the new Wilson Combat Bulletproof ambi safety, I'd rather not have it. I don't like the ambis that use the RH grip panel to retain them.

my local gunshop just got one of those colt rails in.  seems like a nice gun, for sure.  i was actually torn between this and an mc operator too.  i like the mc better, but the price on the colt is more attractive.

i'll prob just hold out till i can find an MC operator-that's a sweet piece.

Their issues tend to be cosmetic and easily spotted before you buy the gun.  The most common problem seems to be overpolishing of one side of the recoil spring tunnel.  Viewed from the muzzle end, the metal on one side of the recoil spring plug will appear thinner than the other.

I also saw a pretty horrific slide serration issue on a recent production Combat Elite.... the rear slide serrations had been cut but then had appeared to have been halfway ground off, or crumbled away.   I suspect the QC guy is narcoleptic.

The three or four Rail Guns and Delta Elites I've inspected have all been good to go.

I have three Government models purchased in the 2005-2006 timeframe (the last time I've bought a Colt), and they are all flawless from a fit and finish perspective.
