Friend has a 1911 made in 1916. But the gun doesn't have a barrel. He's wondering

1) Where he can get a barrel for it (he was told today's barrels will not fit it)

2) How much a replacement barrel would cost?

and

3) How much would it be worth, if anything, once he got a replacement barrel for it?

These have worked fine for USGI 1911's with minimal fitting or no fitting...
Shows they expect some in on 10/05/09....for $59.99,not bad.....

Any other sources?

The guy I'm trying to help called this place and told them what he has and the guy said they will definitely NOT fit.

I was thinking maybe looking at a big gun show since there always seems to be people with parts.

I don't know why the one from midway wouldn't work.  Regardless, wait around I'm sure someone around here as an old barrel in their parts bin.

You have to be very lucky to get a drop-in barrel. But almost any new 1911 barrel can be fit to work by a competent gunsmith.

Now, the front sight is another story and its a sore point with me so don't ask.

The guy on the phone is full of shit. He probably thought he could sell the guy a complete 1911, IMO. Any decently made 1911 aftermarket bbl will (do) fit an older 1911. Yes, there's some minor (usually) gunsmithing involved, but normally nothing too serious.

There's some places that sell mil-surp bbls so as to retain the original package. Check Shotgun News/Gun Digest for ads on mil-surp parts from Sarco & whatnot. These bbls should be in the $40-50 range, possibly less. Should take a 'smith about an hour to properly fit a bbl to a 1911.

Good luck!

George's comments in this thread make it sound like dropping in a barrel may not work.

Most 1911 barrels will require some fitting here or there, even if they're called "Drop In".

To the OP - I've got a Colt barrel I took out of a M1991A1 sitting at home.  It's used but in good shape, all black.  I'm visiting family this week but will be home Tuesday evening.  If your buddy wants it, he can have it free of charge.  PM me with an address if you're interested and I'll put it in the mail.
