I've got a 1911 I built up on a RIA GI frame kit from Sarco.  Great reliability, which is paramount for me.  The gun groups nicely at 10 yards, though unfortunately about 2 inches high.  This is my first question: Are GI sights sighted in for a specific distance, and I'm just not shooting at that distance?

I'm pretty sure I want to replace the sights anyway, with a staked in front sight and an adjustable rear sight.  In my searches through Brownells and Midway, I discover that front sights come in multiple heights and tenon widths.  I'm guessing if I have a rear sight adjustable for height, the height of the front sight doesn't matter as much, but is there a specific tenon width I should buy?  Most of the advice I've read online say "buy wide, file down."  It seems to me that this would be less precise than buying a sight with the correct tenon width.

One last thing...I'm looking at the front sight staking tool, but I also see there's a night sight staking base.  The base looks very useful, but can it be used if I'm not installing night sights?

Thanks!

Most fixed sights are designed to shoot a couple inches high at 25 yards for use with a standard 6 o'clock hold.  Shooting point of aim is a rather modern departure.

You could just file down the rear sight for now.

The GI guns were narrow tenon.  If yours was a close copy, it should have the narrow tenon.    They went to the wide tenon on the Series 80 Colts.

+1 on filing down the rear to achieve POA/POI convergence.  Problem is the GI rear sight didn't leave a hell of a lot to file down.   Upside?  They are nearly free to replace.

Thanks for the info.  I don't want to file down my rear sight, I really don't like those tiny GI sights, and replacing them would be a good experience in working with this platform.

Here's what I'm thinking of replacing them with:

Adjustable rears in the factory dovetail stick up too high for me.   I'd go with a high visibility fixed set.

The LPA SPR's normally stick up quite high. If you want a drop-in adjustable, look at the LPA TPU instead (it's a rear only, using the stock front sight).

MGW does make a nice set for standard cuts as well. (Linked by the poster above.)

I'm definitely looking for drop in adjustable.  I'm liking the look of the TPUs, but by stock front sight, I'm assuming you mean the teeny little sight blade currently on the front of my pistol?  That's something I really want to change out.
