How hard is it to remove and replace( re stake) a front sight ? I have a Colt Mark IV series 70 that needs a new front sight.
The rear is an adjustable Millet, What height front do I need. The old sight was original to the gun and the height was fine.

The 1911 was never designed to have a high-visibility front sight - the staking is too weak for the extra inertia. Thats why  non-GI/non-Colt guns have the front sight dovetailed in, which is the correct method of installation. If I were you, I would spend a bit more and have a gunsmith dovetail a fron sight into the slide. Staking the front sight in again is just throwing good money after bad.

You can measure and match the front height and tools to do the install are available at Brownell's and similar suppliers. The Kuhnhausen books should give you the info you need. The skill needed is not on the level on "rocket science" but if you have no prior experience, I would take it to a 'smith and have him do a dovetail installation unless you want to keep it bone-stock.
