The Dan Wesson Valor came today.  It's a really great looking and classy pistol even with the purposeful VZ grips on it.  Still, the Ahrends seem to suit the clean lines better.

There is one issue: When I cock the hammer by hand and pull the trigger, it doesn't go.  If I engage and release the safety you can see the hammer move slightly and it will work.  Or if I push the hammer forward from full cock it moves slightly into position and will then respond to the trigger.  Something seems to be amiss as the hammer doesn't have the spring in it at full cock like my Springfield does.  It doesn't do this when the hammer is cocked by the slide.  Anyway, that will get sorted out with the manufacturer but a range report will likely be delayed.  Some quick pictures:

With the VZ grips..

She's purdy.

I kinda like the look of the VZ's better, personally.

Course, that's why it's yours and not mine

Looks good. I personally like the VZ's myself but to each their own. That is a wierd issue and DW should take care of it.

Follow up on hammer issue:

Dan Wesson warranty service responded very quickly (within a few hours).  According to them this is a break in issue possibly related to the finish.  I'm not sure I buy that so we'll see how it goes.  If it's not gone in 200 rounds, I'm calling them back.

How could they let the gun out the door with a problem like this?

edit: beautiful gun... just a strange problem.

My understanding is that they assemble and fit in the white, send out for finish and then do final fitting.  Its possible they missed something.  I say shoot the hell out of it and see how she runs.  If there are remaining problems, they will take good care of you.  Of course it sucks to have to send a new pistol back, but at least they have decent CS.  My Valor ran well from the get go.  Which reminds me, I need to go shoot it some more.

Good Luck,

RMD

Good looking pistol.

With the hammer cocked, engage the thumb safety press the trigger a few times kind of hard and snap the thumb safety off and see if the hammer falls to half cock.

if they added the relief cut under the trigger guard  it would be better.

It is already quite a bit better and I think the DW support folks knew what they were talking about.  Can't even get it to stick in the back position now.  I think I'm good to go.  Will check in after shooting this weekend.

Yep, the Springfield will become stuck in the back of your closet or safe, never to be shot again.... New guns are so much fun... my favorite part is getting up at 3am and going down to play.... Just like Christmas... Congrats Spook.

Smiles.. as much as I like the new Valor, I don't see getting rid of the Springfield.  If it works at the range this weekend, and I think it finally will, it may take the place of the BHP as my hiking gun.  I think it's bad karma to get rid of the gun you learned on.

Beautiful gun.  I have one as well, but I'm jealous of those of you with the newer ones since DW decided to clean up the front strap above the checkering.

It really is a beautiful gun.  Of course you've been able to enjoy yours longer.  The current checkering as shown (what looks like a little overrun is a shadow):
