I can appreciate good looking wood grips on a 1911, but I have recently made the decision to switch to some VCD grips. In terms of looks, nice wood panels win hands down. In terms of function, I think something like VZ or VCD wins. As far as age factors into the equation, I am 22.

I took the synthetic grips off my Kimber and replaced them with some beautiful rosewood grips.

I'm 27.

All my 1911's have wood grips except for one with VZ's. I know this thread is about 1911's but hear are before and after shots of two of my other guns that just went from stock rubber to aftermarket wood.

I'm a fan of wood, but I'm going with VZ's for my Springfield that Bob Miller is tinkering with right now. I have wood on my other 1911.

Even though I'm going VZ's, I'm also getting the Double-diamond grips. I think double-diamonds just belong on a 1911.

I'm 23.

How about G10 synthetic?

I like some of the synthetics on stainless or chromed guns, but on a blued steel gun, you can't beat the look of cocobolo... or maybe some burlwood... or maybe some ironwood... or etcetera. Also damascus makes for some pretty grips too. For most use, I like G10, but theres just something about the beauty of wood grips and a leather holster.
But again for use, I prefer either rubber, or better yet G10.

I'm 35.5 yo.

Oh, and there is a nice solution for this.  The arfcom way... GET BOTH! Have some pretty guns, and some that are purely hard use.  Like your nice daily driver, and your pick up you use in the woods.

I have one with wood but all the others have rubber or OEM plastic. For your stats, I'm 41.

I agree wood always looks better but rubber takes a beating better and does not slip when sweaty.

I have wood grips on 2 of my 1911s.  I've got black VZs on my MC Operator, which IMO looks goofy with wood grips.  I'm 30.

I'm a real fan of wood grips, but I also like Ivory and Synthetic (G-10 Preffered).

I am going to make a point here, and take it for what it's worth, but I think grip material is to be concerned with the finish on the gun.  Style and cut are important for function, but looks should consider how the color of the material, whether it be wood or whatever, is going to accent the finish on the gun.

A high polished blue gun deserves Ivory or pretty wood, like rosewood or just about anything from Esmeralda.  Parkarized needs a good set of walnut.  Melonite or Ionbond looks good with some synthetic....and so on.

Just my thoughts,
Bob

I am 46.
Old fashioned, old school, old testament.

I like wood, too.

My RIA 1911 clone had those smooth lifeless wood grips straight from the factory. I bought some walnut double diamond grips to replace them.

My Greek return rack grade Garand had beat up, nasty wood on arrival. I had the barrel changed, the metal stripped and parked and added a set of Wenig standard walnut wood that I finished myself with BLO. There is nothing like the feel of oiling up your wood by hand.(Seriously)

A nice set of Cocobolo on a S&W Model 18.

I saw the stock on this FR-8 and damn near tore my pocket off getting my wallet out.

One of my pride and joys. Early post war Springfield, 4.28 million serial that went through rebuild at the Red River Army Depot on the '60s. One of the best looking USGI stocks I have seen personally.

sorry, but my guns, by tools.

i put Hogues/Pachmyr on all of my guns if possible.  I like the feel.  Yes pretty wood is nice to look at, but imo the hogues/pachmyrs are more functional.

the ONLY way i would put and leave wood on my guns is if they were to be wall hangers or in a glass case.

For looks, nothing beats ivory.  I only have one set of wood stocks on a 1911 type right now.  The Delta Elite still has the rubber it came with, faux ivory on the Gold  Cup, Pachy's on the .38 Super, and micarta on everything else.

I am the same age as you, 53.  BTW, they were putting plastic stocks on 1911s long before we were born.  The 1911s I lusted after in the disco era usually had Pachy's on them.

On a pre WWII Colt, only wood or ivory looks right.  M1911-A1s look just fine with plastic GI stock panels.  Most any modern production looks just fine with almost anything, as long as it is functional.

Wood grips can be nice but most of my guns are tools. I'll take the advantage that some rubber grips can offer. My commander came with wood grips but I have since put crimson laser grips on. Function over form. Besides I like the black on black. My Kimber(which is my daily carry) has wood on it. I'm thinking of replacing it with rattle snake grips(know someone who makes them). I mean they just look so freaking cool.

Also while I know a lot of people are fond of wood grips I think the delta elites grips speak for themselves. Wouldn't feel right replacing them with old school wood.

I have a series I Kimber that I don't carry much, so I put some woods on her and she's beautiful.  My daily carry, an Ultra Carry, has VZs because of the sweat here in FL.  My Desert Warrior has Gunners, but wood wouldn't really look good on her anyway.

Oh yeah, I'm 30.

I'm in Bob's camp.

As long as the grip is functional –– meaning it doesn't detract from the job the gun's intended for –– the finish on the gun really dictates what sort of grip looks best.

Wood grips look much better, but on a gun that I shoot a lot I would prefer some nice comfortable rubber. I'm 21.

From a woman's view I prefer the wood grips. No I'm not 35 I'm younger. Barely! The wood grips to me add a certain class to them rather than the plastic look cheap and cheesy. I do recognize they are comfortable for competition.

I'm 29...

I love the synthetic stock on my "sniper" rifle (Remington 700 in an Accuracy International Chassis System)...

I really like the laminated stock on my ROMAK 3 (PSL)...

My Garand will be restocked in authentic finished wood when I am ready to start that project...

I carry a GLOCK 22 almost everyday, for work, and I love my GLOCKs...

Off duty, I sometimes carry a Sig Sauer P220 Custom Shop Equinox with beautiful wood grips...

I have a Para Ordnance 14.45 LDA with really nice Nill wood grips out with my gunsmith being prettied up...

I have a Remington Rand 1911 on lay-away with the brown plastic grips, which for some reason are my favorite on the old 1911s...

I did own a Springfield 1911 with VZ grips that I really liked...

So for me I guess it depends on the particular firearm we are talking about.

EDIT TO ADD:  I am a little ol' skool maybe.  I am working on a '68 Ford F100 Ranger short wheel base thats going to be my ol' skool cruising ride.

I am in your age bracket and I prefer synthetic/stainless/camo-coated firearms.  I treat firearms as tools and not works of art so I have no interest in anything that's not low maintenance.  Laminated wood is as close as I get however I have yet to actually purchase anything with laminate.
