Had this gun for about 2 months now. Accurate as anything I've ever shot, but I have two major complaints. By the time I heard about the recall Colt put out I had already put 700 rounds through this thing, and could have had a catastrophic failure. It didn't, so live and let live. My MAJOR complaint is that I paid 1100 dollars for a gun that refuses to feed HP ammo of any brand. I have no access to any reliable smiths in my area, and after many horror stories, I cannot mail it off to someone I've never met. Anyone else with defenders or night defenders had this problem?

I've tried. SPEER GPHP, Federal Hydrashok, Corbon HP,

How long have you had the defender?

I've had mine for about 8 years or so, and never had a feeding problem

I have one of the originals, with the look-alike Novak rear sight.

I haven't heard of a recall, so if you can, would you be so good as to link some info on that.

My defender, will feed, 230 Gold Dot's perfectly, Since that's what I carry in other guns, I havent tried other flavors.

As I see it, you have two choices:

1) Call Colt, explain your problem, and see if they will make it right for you.

2)  Call a reputable 1911 smith and talk to them about your gun.  There are plenty of 1911 gunsmiths that are skilled, honest, and completely trustworthy.  I have personally had experiences with Novak's and Eddie Vandenberg and can recommend them both wholeheartedly.  Virgil Tripp took care of a problematic Les Baer for a good friend.   I would in no way hesitate to mail my gun to any of the above.  There are plenty of others out there. Do a little homework, ask around, and you will be just fine.  In fact, you might very well end up with a much better pistol than what Colt's can do for you.

The recall is only for Defenders and Night Defenders made after March 2007. I called Colt but made the mistake of telling them that it will feed ball but no HP. They said that it would be on my dime to send it back to them and have any polishing or such done. If I'm going to get a Smith to work on it, might as well be one of the big name and get it right the first time.

+1

That's damn good advice.

I have a New Agent (which is in Hartford now ) that loves Golden Saber and Gold Dot ammo. It's been very reliable.

I'm surprised and disappointed to hear Colt gave you some grief when you talked with them.

DId you talk with someone with some authority at Colt? Or just a guy who wanted to get you off the phone asap?

It sounds like your Colt just needs some basic tweaking; polish feed ramp, throat barrel, etc. Colt should handle that while they replace the safety and recoil assy.

Anyway, keep us updated on your situation.

Good luck.

Mistake-Schmake.

Who buys a 3" arm-wrestler for target practice?! This is a carry pistol designed for carry ammunition. A micro that doesn't feed JHP is as useless as a Corvette with a governor set to 65. You did nothing wrong telling them that it feeds X but not Y and if the first attempt failed, I would be balling out someone for the supervisor, and taking their name down asking them point blank if this person is actually representing on behalf of the company that their carry pistol, which chokes on carry ammo is actually considered acceptable. You need not be ugly about this if it's not your style, but you need to be sure to get a supervisor on the phone and explain your aggrevation personally. In fact, if I were you I would politely tell one of the ladies to get the supervisor. Document the ammo used and be sure that you are using Colt mags (or better such as Wilsons) to eliminate that variable.  Make sure you try this AT LEAST one more time with customer service before spending money you shouldn't.
