I am looking to get a 1911 for my father and have some engraving done to the slide.  I want to get him a Springfield mil-spec, but I would rather have a blank slide to engrave on, with the Springfield text and logo and then adding more too it I think will make it too crowded.

I am new to 1911s, what is the best way to go this route and end up with a Mil-spec equivalent 1911 w/blankslide, without breaking the bank?

Semi-custom 1911s can be special ordered with a "naked slide"––the term used for what you're after––but I doubt that would apply to a Mil-Spec.  I'd start by calling Springfield Customer Service and posing your question to them and soliciting their suggestions.  I'm sure they could accomodate your wishes, its the pricetag that could be the deal breaker. You might be able to tell them what you want engraved, and they could do that, refinish the slide and provide you with what your after in a factory package.  Dollars would be the only issue.

Let us know what they say, I've always wanted to ask them this question.

when my unit deployed to iraq for OIFIII we called SA and ordered 88 SS GI models with our units logos(flying tigers). we also had the dates and several other things engraved on the slides and frames. i think we paid 625 shipped for these. i am not sure if they would do one offs but they did come thru for us.

Or you could contact your friendly neighborhood gunsmith and see if he would build you a comparable gun on the frame of your choice with a blank Caspian or Essex slide...

A good gunsmith should be able to remove them easily with a surface grinder.  Or you could take your slide to a machine shop that has a surface grinder and have them do it.

Or in the case of a slide that has deep markings a skilled TIG welder can fill in the surface and grind it flat.

I love having my own TIG.

Works great especially on RUGER products XD.

I called and talked with them, they said they do not sell blank slides without markings.  They come the way they come.

Not surprised. Well... I'm sure you can find a smith willing to help you out.

You can also get them from Caspian.

If you want to do a build or just swap slides, you can get a blank slide from Caspian, Essex or the Rock Island GI  and tactical slides from Sarco
