I have a chance to trade my XDm9  for a Colt MKIV Series 70.  I don't know much about these.  Is this a decent deal?  Are they good guns?

Thanks.

Don't know a thing about the XDm9, so can't help with relative values.  I do know that an original Series 70 Mk IV, all original and in nice shape should bring about $7-800.  A little more with box and manual..  Un-messed with S70s are getting hard to find, and I've seen pristine,  never fired examples list and sell for $1100.  If the S70 you're considering is a beater, then $5-$600 would be more appropriate.

I'd do it, but I prefer 1911s.

The XD is a fine weapon, but the S70 is a great weapon. Provided the S70 is in good shape I would make the trade.

As long as everything checks out and it has not been dicked with by "Bubba" the wannabe gunsmith then I'd do it myself. I'd familiarize myself on what to check on a 1911 before I did the trade to do a good inspection of it.

Actually the Series 70 Colts were pretty hit and miss in the QC department.

Are the older models with the colic bushings better in the QC dept?

There apparently were some bad examples in the older S70 Government Model pistols.  I have four of them, and they are all
just fine.  There are issues with current Colt (and other popular 1911 brands as well) production so it's like everything else––unless you have a chance to physicall eyeball inspect the piece before purchase, there is a chance you might get one that's not perfect.  I don't think you can generalize and say that all S70s built in 197X were lemons.

Make a list of things to look for.  Check out the pistol against the list.  Take it from there.  The biggest detrement to original 70 Series value, is modifications, especially those performed by amateurs.  Get some good pictures of unmodified examples––gunbroker.com is a good source.
Compare your prospective purchase against the pictures.  Reject anything that doesn't exactly duplicate the pictures.  Good luck.

Yep.  I was told by a serious collector/shooter that an easy thing to remember is that if there's a "G" in the serial number think "good".

True, although I have a nice Gold Cup S70 that is "good as gold".

I can't comment on the trade value, but out of the many 1911s I have owned, my Series 70 is the best shooter and most reliable that I have owned.

asking if you should trade for a 1911 in the 1911 forum is like asking a fat kid if he wants cake. Post that same qestion in the XDm forum and you will get very different answers. I own both company's and own a S70. I would trade just for the fact I am not a .40 S&W fan but rather have .45. I have the xd compact in .45. But I carry a Glock 30. There is nothing wrong with any of these fine frearms. I am actually making a deal to trade for a Kimber ultra cdp. For the thinness of a single stack. As far as your question goes. If you decide to trade again like everyone says make sure its in good shape no mods. And you should also expect to throw some cash in the deal as well. I believe Colts run a little higher than do XD

I bought a new series 70 around 1981..........fine pistol and no problems with it other than the stock sights on these units suck............

Colts and S70s are fine guns, worthy of shooting, collecting or working on, depending on condition. An XD will always be an XD. You can always get another one, they're all pretty much the same. YMMV.

One thing the other posters haven't asked yet, is this an ORIGINAL Series 70 or is it one of the Series 70 REPRODUCTIONS that Colt started producing a couple of years ago?
