I seem to be developing a taste for vanilla.
In the past I had a Kimber Eclipse Target and a Springfield Ultracompact and liked them both, but for reasons beyond my control, they had to go. Last summer I decided I wanted an autopistol, I wanted it to be a 1911, and I wanted it to be value priced. My father and I were having a get together and after dinner went over to Gander Mountain. He got a Baretta 9000s IIRC and I got a plain jane High Standard (Armscor) 1911 that was 'on sale' for $450. (yeah, I probably got ripped off.) It does deviate from specification slightly, but, in a good way. The ejection port is lowered and scalloped, the feed ramp is polished the chamber throated and the magazine well is beveled. The machine work appears to be neatly done without any tool marks. The flat black finish is even and all the lines are crisp. I haven't had any stoppages so far. Not the prettiest of guns, but, not hideous either. It has grown on me to be my favorite pistol. What do you guys think? Of the gun? Of the deal? What about the proposition that a plain gun is as worthy if not more worthy than one with all the bells and whistles? |

Vanilla is a boring flavor that's out of this world when done right.
Use real flecks of vanilla bean and fresh hand-churned cream, and you'll beat that drug store rocky road to hell. It doesn't get better than a genuine USGI (Colt, RR, Ithaca, USS, or Singer). A realistic alternative is the WWI repro from Colt. To me, anything else (recent production) is just a pale clone with artificial flavor. |
