What is the purpose?
Any pros and cons from a 2 piece design? |
| They are a little more consistent and less likely to get a little "out of shape". I use them on all my 1911s. I only use the one piece. As perfect as the 1911 design is ,there have been some good improvements over the last 100 years. The sights being the best example and the Wilson 8 round mags. |

So the slide moves more consistently? Its really very minute but the spring wiggles around as it compress and uncompresses. It just decreases the very unlikely possibility of a spring fuck up. And the two piece design also has a small possibility of coming undone at a bad time so they are usually used on a gun with a compensator that is hard to disassemble with a one piece. |

The FLGR does nothing to improve reliability. Some people think their pistol is a bit smoother with one. I can't tell the difference when I shoot. They do add a bit of muzzle weight which theoretically means quicker follow up shots. I can't tell the difference here, either. If I have a choice, I go with the standard guide rod but it's not a big deal.
Downside, field stripping requires a tool. Also, as previous poster mentioned, the two-piece rods have been known to come apart. |
| Unless you need the weight up front for a competition gun, they serve no useful purpose. Some people say their guns feel "smoother" with one, but the argument that they prevent spring kinking is weak at best. FLGR's make take down more difficult, 2 piece versions can come loose, and they can inhibit some clearance drills. |

I have two Colts with FLGRs (one piece) and neither require a "tool" to field strip. Funny, mine doesn't either. I think he meant the two peice ones. My TRP has a two piece and requires an allen wrench to take down. I may switch it out for a standard GI setup, or I may leave it stock. Not sure yet... |

I have three 1911's, a Kimber, a Fusion Longslide and an RIA.
The Kimber and Fusion are 10mm and both have a full length rod, the Fusion's is two piece and I do NOT take the rod apart to remove the slide. The RIA has a GI rod and I will put the factory rod from the Kimber in there when I get a tungsten rod for it. Use what you like and feel comfortable with, I know I do. |

I personally don't think they're a problem.
Original GI type setup works fine. So do most of the FLGR's you see. I don't like 2-piece either, only the one-piece. If your gun runs well, don't fix what ain't broke. I wouldn't go spending money to put a FLGR in a pistol that doesn't have one, but my Kimber, for example, has one, and runs just fine. I don't see a need to change. Only real "con" I see is that it won't let you do that trick where you can cock/chamber/clear malfunction one-handed, using a wall corner or table corner, step, what have you..................some of you guys know what I'm talkin' about................. And no, no "tool" needed for disassembly on mine either. It's no big deal. |
