| So I am considering getting a 1911 but I don't want to buy something that is a POS. I was originally thinking Kimber but after all the horror story's I have decided to come to you for help (Is Kimber really that bad?). I am looking for something that will be used for defensive purposes so it needs to be reliable out of the box. So lets have your recommendations on what I should look for with some idea on what I should pay for it. |
| I have two colts: series 80 enhanced and the 1918 Black army reproduction. Both accurate and never a problem. luv 'em. Like the threads say - holding a 1911 is like shaking hands with an old friend. I would stay away from the brands with the hot metal injection molding. |

(Is Kimber really that bad?) Buyer beware. Mine has had problems from day one. Went back to the factory and came back OK just to have it go bad in another area. I'll either sell it off or gut it out for tool steel parts, which is something I shouldn't have to do on a $900 pistol The only 1911s I've owned that were reliable out of the box were Colts. I've owned 2 Colts, a few springers and this current Kimber (of which I'll never buy again, by far the worst of'em all). |

Don't own one, but I doubt you can go wrong with Springfield or Colt. I also hear good things about Smith & Wesson. I own 3 Taurus PT1911's and they have been totally flawless and less expensive than the others. Find one you like and go for it...
Oh....and don't "think" about getting a 1911...just get it! The ulitimate semi-auto hangun. |

I have a Kimber Eclipse that has run 100%. That said, I've only put 250 rounds through it so far. But it hasn't had a hiccup. Thats using KimPro mags. I even ran Wolf through it. Never do that again. The Kimber is by far the most accurate, nicest feeling and shooting of my 1911's.
Keep in mind, this is a technical forum so you will find more people writing about problems trying to find answers. |

Price and performance along with the best Customer Service if you need it goes to Springfield Armory. What he said. My Loaded had ran fine with out any problems except from when I took it to the smith to have something done and his other guy messed up my recoil spring cap. I did not know until I hit the range and started having some FTF and the slide not going into battery. I took it apart and chatted with SGB on here and he looked at my picks and stuff and advised me on what to do. I replaced the spring cap and guide rod and a new WOLFF 18 1/2 recoil spring and extra power firng pin sring. That fixed my problem and I took the old one down to my smith and showed hom and he reimburst me for the parts I had to buy to replace what his other guy messed up. |
| Thanks for the reply's thus far... What about Wilson Combat 1911? what would the price on one of those run? Also who knows of some retailers that have NIB Colts? I have a couple LE6920's so assuming that the quality is anywhere near my 6920 I will have no problems trusting my life to one. |

Dont buy a Colt 1911 unless you can look it over. Wilsons are awesome but about 2000 bucks to get in the door new. Plus you wont appreciate it as much if you dont work your way up through the Colts, Kimbers and Springfields. |

Price and performance along with the best Customer Service if you need it goes to Springfield Armory. This or STI. Right now its the only two brands I would recommend to a new owner of a 1911. I did not own Springfield prior to a TRP 1911 purchased end of last year and have been nothing but impressed. It's doesn't have the beautiful clean lines of an STI but she shoots well and is a workhorse. Right now the only two carry's are the Springfield TRP and STI Ranger II. Both also see a lot of class time as well. |
