I was thinking of getting a new barrel for my Springfield Armory GI. I was wondering if I need to check any clearances with the slide or if I will be able to just swap the new one in and be done with it. If I do need to check stuff, what and how would I do that?

There is no true drop in on 1911's IMHO. I think the kart NM with the prefit front bushing is as good a barrel as you can buy. A gunsmith can fit one in an hour or two, a first timer, 6 to 12 hours.

Start reading the stickies on it, maybe join a 1911 forum.

If your going for accuracy you will benefit more from a custom fit bushing than a new barrel. Provided your barrel is fit correctly.

By benefit more I mean cost vs accuracy gains.  EGW sells bushing where you supply the numbers (barrel od slide id) and they machine it to those numbers.
