I've been a handgun owner since 1995, but I've only shot a 1911 style pistol ONCE. I remember it being a very sweet experience. I have no knowledge of the maintenance of 1911s, and I really don't know what to look for as far as buying used. I saw a full size for sale, it is a Para-Ord frame, with a Colt slide. It is definitely used, as the sharp edges of the frame have wear, and the one magazine that comes with it has a dented floor plate. The salesman didn't say much about it, and I do not know what the mag holds. The bore looked to be in good shape. It seemed to be a basic set up, asking price $425. What should I look for to indicate if its a deal or trouble?
Your experienced opinions are welcomed. edit- I've read some of the threads here, and it seems like many of you are into the high end stuff. I'm not looking for a "race" gun, just a solid shooter. And the thicker grip doesn't bother me, as I shoot my Desert Eagle just fine. edit II- Since it seems that this was someone else's build, I had the idea to add some things of my own, night sights, ambi- safety (I'm a lefty), and different grips. What are important upgrades to increase the quality of the gun? Skeletonized hammer and trigger? What else? |

I had a Para Ord a few years ago that I bought NIB. It was a less than impressive pistol.
In regard to the pistol that you saw, if it were me, the determining factor would be magazine availability. For the price that you stated, it would have to be a real junker not to be worth that. But, if mags are hard to get or excessively expensive, then I would pass. |
