Been looking thru the production numbers just out from ATF.  Pulling out 1911 production totals probably can't be done, but I thought listing some of the big names might be interesting.

Nighthawk Custom  1167
Wilsons  1895
Colt  14546
US Firearms  450
Les Baer  1936
Rock River 231
Springfield 9655
Ed Brown  1065
Kimber 52763
STI  5419
Strayer Voight  1407
Caspian  1466
Olympic  293
Kahr/Auto Ordnance  11479
CZ/Dan Wesson 2374

Obviously this doesn't include places that rebuild existing pistols.  Numbers for Smith, SIG and some of the others are buried to deep for me to dig out.  It's possible some of these number include things other than 1911's, ATF sorts the numbers just by caliber.  This does not include imports, ie no Armscor, Taurus, etal.

Most of the high end builders are pretty small, only 2000 units a year or less..

52K +  Kimbers . . . wow, is that correct?  I knew they were popular, but not THAT popular

Yeah, that's the number.  Probably half the 1911 market all to themselves.  Which based on what I see at shows and gun shops, sounds about right.

That is very interesting info. Thanks for sharing. I can't believe how many more Kimber produces than ... well all the others combined. HOLY COW! However, I have 3 1911s currently and 2 are Kimbers so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

That was my first thought. Figured springfield would be closer to them in numbers.

I believe those are the made in USA numbers, excluding the Brazilian made imports.

Springfield numbers would not include the Brazilian imports; ie no Mil Specs, GI's and such.  So their true number sold is undoubtedly much higher.

Haven't found any firearms import numbers as yet.

And if you believe the internet, that's a whole lot of shitty, unreliable guns they keep cranking out and selling...

Kimber made them.  Doesn't mean they sold/someone bought them.

If that were the case why would the Colt and Rock River Arms numbers be so low?

Probably does explain why there are a lot of "crappy" Kimbers.. 5-10% bad apples of 52,000 is a lot more internet board complaining than 5-10% (or less in Springfield's case ) of 10,000+ by Springfield. But of course there is also "people don't know any better"

Kimber as a manufacturer has some faults as does any company, overall they still produce a nice product. I have two Kimber's I'd not hesitate to carry.

I am surprised that Colt made so many.  I also wonder if the number given for Caspian includes all of their bare frames.  Caspian's numbers seem kind of low.

I have never even seen a USFA auto!  Some body must be buying some, though.

STI's number was higher than I expected.

I REALLY like STI

high numbers from Kahr/Auto Ordnance prove that people are cheapskates.

there is nothing better than a quality 1911........and nothing worse than a cheap one.
