Now, because I have some sort of mental condition, I have been finding myself wanting a long-slide 1911.
Considering the fact that I don't participate in any compititions, I still would like a target type 1911 to push my abilities further.
The long-slide configuration intrigues me and stands to reason that a longer barrel and longer sight radius is a step in the right direction towards better accuracy at longer ranges.  I also like these same principles in regards to a hunting pistol as well.
I can't be the only nutcase that thinks like this?

With that said, my questions are:

Why aren't there more selection available from manufacturers?
I've only found two (so far):

http://www.springfield-armory.com/armory.php?version=17

http://www.paraord.com/new/product_pistol.php?id=70

If given the choice between these two, which one would you pick?
Or are there better options out there that I just haven't found yet?
Or just build one?

I don't want to spend a metric butt-load of cash on one if I do decide to pull the trigger, but I fully understand the "you get what you pay for" trueism.
I need some experienced help here.....thanks.

Les Baer also makes/sells a longslide, and I believe that Fusion makes/sells a longslide as well.

Between the ones you have listed though, I'd go with the Springfield. Para guns are known to be "iffy" at best; slides and frames might be good, but the rest is ..not as well crafted.

As far as why no one makes them really...well, there's not much demand except for hunters, and for target/competition shooters...and why hunt with an auto when you can hunt with a revolver? Especially since a revolver's mechanical accuracy is probably better and it can certainly handle stouter loads, not to mention more reliable under a variety of conditions/loads..

Many handgun competitions have length/size/weight requirements which no longslide 1911 will pass, and in competitions where length/weight don't matter...speed does. And drawing a foot-long saber from a holster isn't nearly as daintily done as a Commander

STI makes a Trojan 6.0 model as well.

I used to have a Springfield V-16 longslide I had to sell it .  It was scary accurate for me, I wish I never sold it.  If I had the cash and was looking to pickup a longslide that would be the gun Id want again.

I laughed out loud at that...the same picture is in my mind as well.  I forget what movie it was but the scene where the character pulls out this two foot long revolver and says: "It's a 88 magnum....it shoots through schools.",  keeps playing through my head. .

But you are correct in that a magnum revolver would be best for a dedicated hunting handgun and I agree wholeheartedly.  I just want to stay within the 1911 platform is all.  I plan on mostly target shooting for my own entertainment and if it wants to come along for over night hunting/ camping trips, I'll drag it along.  We have mountain lions here...in spades.

I have found a few others with some help from you guys.
Rock Island Armory:

and a couple from STI:
Their Trojan 6.0 and TargetMaster (thanks JohnRippert)
I have also checked out kits from Fusion, STI and Caspian also.

The kits interested me as I like to mess with stuff as it is and I have machine tools anyway, but for simplicity sake I think I'll get a complete weapon to start with.  At this point, it'll be either be the Springer at the lower end, cost wise, and STI TargetMaster at the upper.
I want to thank all that responded, it is very appreciated.  I'm going to see what my local gun shop can get me now.

If anyone has any parting thoughts or other options I may have missed, please post.
Thanks again.

Right now my AMT long slide (LS) is my go to gun, reduced recoil and so dependable. I normally shoot at 100 yds (you'll notice in the picture how far the rear sites are up) but can hit better with the Cot Gold Cup.

The LS extractor dosen't work and doesn't hold adjustment but it always kicks them out. I would put a new one in but it just works so I don't do anything to it. Do love the 7" barrel

The recoil comparison from 7" to 5" barrel is is like the different between a 5" & 3.5"; what does that mean quicker follow up shots. However my neihbor shoots .45 in compensation and he can shoot his 5" must faster than I can my 7"

The movie is "Johnny Dangerously", you friggen Ice-holes.

I shoot a 6 inch slide.  It was no slower drawing from a Kydex holster than my 5".  My eyes are crap so I like the exra distance on the front sight.  I built it myself.  I would buy the STI target master for your scenario.

STI also makes a couple Hi-Capacity 6" guns.

STI EAGLE

They also just came out with the "Perfect 10".  A 6" in 10mm but that one runs around $2500.
