Does anyone make a 1911 in the $600-700 range that is dependable??  I have absoluetly ZERO experience with the 1911 platform but would like to add one to the colletion.  There's a local gunshow this weekend, but I'm on a pretty tight budget.  Any ideas or suggestions or should I save up more and wait??

Taurus PT1911. Some people hate them and some love them. I owned one and was very happy with it. Zero problems. No failure to feed or eject. Pretty accurate too. They are no custom 1911 though. Being in the $550-$650 price range, you get the most for your money.

1 Springfield Armory Loaded
2 STI Spartan

I had similar price range and research and discussions here led me to these being the best bang for your buck.  Im goin for the spartan.

+1  Don't bother with the Taurus.

Get the Springfield Loaded or Springer MilSpec (not the 'GI' - the Mil Spec has Slanted Slide Serrations), or an STI Spartan.

The Springer GI is still a great gun, and mine has been 100% reliable, but it is usually considered a 'Base Gun' which requires a fair bit of 'work' to bring it up to a good all-around 1911 after changing out parts, springs, polishing, etc...

If you shop well, you can find a used series 70 Colt for around 600/700 (Gun Broker). Hard to argue with the pony!

Or, Springfield Mil-Spec or better (top you'll find in your range would be the "Loaded" model, lots of feaures- I've got two of them, been very good). I'd pass on the Taurus. YMMV.

Cheap and 1911 just don't mix.

I'd opt for a used Colt, (later prod) Dan Wesson, or Springfield in that order.

New guns: STI Spartan

Folks poo-poo Kimber all day long, but my experience has been different. My Kimber Stainless (lowest end model) has a hair over 13,000 rounds through it, problem free.

You can pick up a Kimber Custom within your price range pretty easily.

Where do the Rock River 1911's fit in?
Or do they?

Thanks!

RRA 1911s are in the Semi-custom realm.  High endish.  Problem right now is that they stopped producing them.  At least for now.
Think $1500 and up

No, they aren't the same as Rock Islands.

I have a Taurus PT1911, a Rock Island Armory 1911A1, and a Springfield Armory GI 1911A1.  All three worked just fine out of the box, and are still working just fine.  The RIA was the cheapest at $325.00.

They'll work!  My tactical has yet to have a hiccup....great gun for the little amount of money you'll spend.
