I am using Wilson 47D .45 ACP magazines.

Sometimes when I slap the magazine into the magazine well the baseplate unlocks and slides forward.

It happens mainly when I am doing reload drills with the magazine empty.

Is this common? I have been using shooting star exclusively prior to these wilsons without a single issue.

My guess is you broke the baseplate somehow.  They are actually kind of a pain to get off intentionally, so if it's sliding off something is wrong.

For my carry weapons, I swapped the polymer baseplate for the steel ones. (mostly because they are lower profile.)

Inspect them and make sure the entire round metal locking bump on the internal  locking plate is visible through the hole in the base plate.

If it isn't, tapping the magazine on the front of the base plate on a hard surface will usually seat it.

Yeah, it sounds like the basepads got un-seated off of the bump on the floorplate.

It's easiest to correct this with a loaded mag; usually, with a fully-loaded 47D, you can wiggle a mis-seated basepad a bit until it clicks into its proper place. Of course, it doesn't need to be loaded, but I've found that the extra tension helps - especially with the low-profile steel pads, which I have changed a number of my standard 47Ds over to.

+1 to the last 2 posts.

It most likely sounds like you hadn't properly seated the baseplate after your last reassembly, and the best ones to go with are their metallics (steel or Al)

These came from the factory new, never disassembled.

I'll take the advice.

Thanks

I had two Wilson baseplates that wouldn't go far enough back to fully engage the bump into the recess in the base.   Created the same problem.

Upon further inspection I could see that the back of the magazine (the flat where the weld is) was too long and obstructed the baseplate from moving all of the way to the rear.  A few strokes with a file to remove 1/32 or so of material (from the mag body, not the base) and the problem was solved.
